Staying in an apt in Brooklyn and going to Barbados for the long weekend, sounds like she lives there. She lived and has good story. Time to upgrade to a better building.

I salute the woman's decision not to sue. I sincerely hope that the NYPD paid for top-class medical treatment and apologised, but really it was an accident and something that the NYPD officer had no control over. If anything I hope the person who kicked the shield is also facing additional charges for resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and anything else they can throw at him.

I wonder if this incident would have ever gotten any news coverage if SHE WERE NOT JAPANESE???

In this case, the officer was hit and the gun went off accidently. Sad you are trying to use this accident to rant about the US.

Think this is a really silly argument to make. Of course it matters. You'd don't believe that the US media doesn't use "American" or "US" in their reports on US citizens/companies etc. who have been involved in some kind of incident overseas. " US soldier killed in .....", "American citizen arrested in ....", "US company Involved in ..... in......". Other countries, say Canada, don't do the same?

This was not your regular Japanese woman. How many Japanese women do you know that even have the guts to get past all the hype of even stepping foot in a scary place like Brooklyn let alone sleeping in an apartment there. She sounds very unconventional (by Japanese statndards) to me. Good for her.... enjoy Barbados.

It may not be incorrect, but its poorly written, especially for news article. I would have used "received police escort"...makes for a more pleasant read...IMHO

Actually the Wall Street Journal clearly states she was Japanese visiting from Japan with here friend who was also Japanese. They were staying at the apartment of a male acquaintance they know from the US Marine Corps (who was stationed in Japan).

Whoa...that's scary...she could have easily been killed. BTW, she was hit by a bullet and her only concern was missing a flight? I'd be milking this. I would be demanding compensation, first class flight back to Japan, and a dinner AT LEAST!

Nah, the cops here just can't catch killers who are barefoot and go on holiday instead of dealing with stalkers. Please. This was an accident. They happen. Everywhere.

Serious enough for her to go to the hospital (and remain there long enough to receive a visit from the Police Commissioner), but minor enough for her to go to fly to Barbados on the same day. Not much help, eh.

She's lucky it was not more serious. It could have killed her. But its a shame that she probably won't be able to swim in Barbados.

New York seems to be a kinda dangerous. America is a war filed as they shoot each other everyday. Sightseeing is very careful there.

facepalm! Unfortunately American law enforcement has become quite the "Black Knight!" If the LE officer's firearm has the safety released the only discharge is "accidental!"
