Train attacker says he targeted Tokyo in hopes of increasing

Just show to the public information that not really helpful, while previous several attack shows that attackers have mental trouble but nothing really done to address this.

And yet he failed to kill a single person, thankfully. What a complete loser. Give him his wish and a quick execution. Not all life is precious.

-5 ( +11 / -16 )

Give him his wish and a quick execution. Not all life is precious.

Have to agree 100%. The huge expense of keeping this animal alive in maximum security for decades is simply not justified.

A rope is far cheaper.

-7 ( +9 / -16 )

I’m so glad I take trains in Tokyo only once or twice a year, you can see there are quite a few people with mental illnesses roaming around, never know if they will just pop up next to you.

Keio is so lucky no one is dead by now, the outrage would be unbearable over their policy to lock up dozens of people with a psycho inside their carriage

-9 ( +4 / -13 )

Better make sure all other trains are stopped as well.

Dobreyo

Not sure what that means, they stopped all trains on the line in both directions.

A little hyperbolic with this statement aren't you? I'd hardly say this kind of thing on trains in Tokyo is a common thing.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

Headline focusing on the attack and other potential victims versus sensationalizing a delusional mind’s choice of a silly costume.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

This kid’s logic is funny. No friends, no work, and troubled relationships so he decides “Let’s kill a lot of people” He’s from Fukuoka, but he doesn’t really want to kill anyone he knows (loser be losers) , so he shops around and chooses Tokyo because of the body count potential and lack of familiar ties.

This guy has a mental illness but is still functional. Put him in a farm somewhere and have him work till the end of his days. Some repetitive and boring.

Wishing the 72 y.o. victim a quick recovery and the ability to enjoy his remaining ‘retirement’ years.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Yes, “no guns” readily available but sure seems that angry Japanese men periodically take out their frustrations in life on others, lashing out at ‘innocents’ with knives and flammables.

- @lostrune2 8:12am: “No gun.”

0 ( +3 / -3 )

The attacker’s wish to get a death sentence may not be granted. He’ll probably be put through a series of psychiatric tests to prove his insanity, locked up in a mental illness facility for a few years, and then released and he’ll start roaming the streets again for new victims.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Keep him in jail till he rots!

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Hang him. He wants the death penalty so grant him his wish. One less mouthbreather stealing air and space from society.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

This is a more twisted depraved cry for help or attention similar to teenage girls slashing arms. He didn't really want to kill people, just hurt them and get noticed. There's no way he could have failed to killed anyone on a packed car w a knife.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Don't give him what he wants because it would encourage others to be like him

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

The ministry ordered the companies to promptly open train doors at a platform in the event of an emergency even if train cars do not stop at the right place.

It held a similar meeting after a man stabbed or slashed 10 passengers in August on an Odakyu Electric Railway commuter train in the capital's Setagaya Ward.

So they had a similar meeting two months prior, yet nobody learned anything about opening the doors in case of an emergency is how this reads. If that is the case, the ministry and the railway companies are a bunch of morons. Something similar is likely to happen again with the doors staying closed yet again, and those imbeciles will be having yet another meeting talking about the same nonsense with no changes. Yes, sounds like Japan.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Seems like it didn't work.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Why do sooooo many folk refuse to accept the stark reality and truth about the susceptibility and vulnerability of that critical component of human biology, the human brain, to malfunctioning (aka menta illness)? Hattori is the perfect poster boy. Right to life?

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Not a very competent killer, is he? But yeah, give him his wish. Now. Capital punishment works. I have never heard of an executed person go on to commit more crimes.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

The guy (don't want to hear his name, makes me sick) is an attention seeker. Probably what would have been called a sociopath, or bordering psychopath, lacking a certain 'natural' moral restraint. Give him a lifetime of useful work somewhere and hope that one day he might finally mature and realize what he did.

Meantime I wish they would give us updates on the poor old guy that he stabbed, as this silence gives a bad feeling.

PS There were a couple of extra details on the mainstream news which this article (consciously?) leaves out, such as what was in those aerosol cans mentioned above, and how he sprayed the old man with it before stabbing him.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

“Tokyo police referred Hattori to prosecutors Tuesday on suspicion of attempted murder.”

On suspicion of attempted murder?? Two days after being caught on the scene? Not sure if this is really reflecting dense police work in Japan or simply a poorly written article.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Unless Japan does more to help these mentally disturbed people, these incidences are just going to increase. Japan already has the highest number of mentally ill people per capita in the whole world, double the next highest country. Why the government does nothing about this is mind boggling.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

It's meant as a deterrent. Clearly it not working in this case.

Is it the highest number of mentally ill people or the highest number of hospital beds allocated for mentally ill people per capita which is true but different meaning?

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

@Tom Doley

Japan already has the highest number of mentally ill people per capita in the whole world, double the next highest country.

Laughably false.

The prevalence of Common Mental Diseases (CMD) in Japan is relatively low. Japan stacks up favorably against the United States, which ranks fourth globally in wealth inequality and has recorded a prevalence of CMD that is approximately three times that of Japan.

Train attacker says he targeted Tokyo in hopes of increasing kill count

Well, he was not very successful, was he. He stabbed one guy, and the others got injured from climbing out of windows, not by him. So he failed not only in his job and relationships but also in his crime.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

once he is free again, he'll be out there plotting another horrifying event - keep him locked up forever!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I understand people want to know more about the incident, but getting famous is part of why the crazy guy did this, the less is published about him the best, focus on the victims and safety measures and not on the criminal.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Hattori was quoted as saying he "wanted to kill people and be given the death penalty" and that he had been "thinking from around June of being sentenced to death."

So he wanted to die, but was so afraid of catching Covid that he kept wearing a mask? He's not only a lunatic and evil, but also stupid.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

If he's banged up in Japanese jail, surely he has no access either to TV or to the papers, let along the internet, so how will this joker ever know if he's infamous or not?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Quite the joker. Not surprising he had 'troubled relationships with his friends'. Luckily no one was killed. Agree he should be locked up for a long time and not given his wish of execution.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

It is true that Japan has the highest number of hospital beds for not only the mentally-ill but also for whatever-ill-requiring beds. which, I mean, is not necessarily a good story but related to the business of hospitals and the system.

I don't mean to be offensive to anyone, but those regular posters here might want to check if you are and mentally healthy

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

….

Now there is rule , no need to use commonsense..,

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@zichi " Without someone dying capital punishment is not on the table."

This guy went on a rampage, he attacked 17 inocent people, quote, "I thought I could kill a lot of people in Tokyo," He went to kill people, he had the intent, by the luck of god he didnt kill any one.

What do you surgest the dept of justice do with him? lock him up for x years? there is something seriously wrong with him, as for killing him, its border line with me, wether he stays alive or not.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

We can only be thankful that Japan has the strictest gun laws in the world to keep everyone safe. Imagine if he had a semi-auto rifle to attack the trains like Americans do.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Luckily, no one was killed which just shows everyone one more reason that he is a failure.

Ideally, the best punishment would be a long prison sentence where someone continues to remind him of that failure!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Japan’s Animal Farm-like society is what created him and what he’s trying to escape from in the first place.

It is true that Japan has the highest number of hospital beds for not only the mentally-ill but also for whatever-ill-requiring beds.

Except when it’s Covid dedicated beds; in which case there’s an unchanging and ridiculously small finite number. From the occupancy rate is extrapolated whether the sky is falling in.

Guys like this with a death wish should be able to get a suicide pill from their doctor and end their own life in peace. It would stop the crazy behaviour they resort to, in orfder to get hung.

Yeah, he set peeping camera in the shower room at an internet-cafe he worked as part-time and got busted later, which was the fault of the society. He broken up with his girlfriend he had gone out with long time and became mentally unstable, which was the fault of the society, he moved around after he resigned call center job after being transferred due to the customers' claims about his attitudes, that was the fault of the society.

All other options closed off because he kept crushing them one by one by himself except last option getting out of the society which he didn't have guts to pursue. Perhaps you can show him how to do take such last option.

That society could be a better place is a given. Unfortunately, so too is your head in the sand reluctance to accept that such tragedies are partly due to the arrogance and parasitism encapsulated in your Marie Antoinette-like certitude that everything would be fine if only we’d all get with the program.

Sounds like extreme self-justification forcing every other members of the society to turn in your left cheek when you got slapped on your right. Even wild animal species would move far to where they get with the program better.

Partly is a convenient adverb as opposed to being created by the society. How convenient it is, I don't even have an idea how I could fell well when venting your pus off-the-shoulder and exterminate others next to you,

likewise, keep cursing a country as if it is peculiarly responsible for it

To avoid continuing embarrassment to yourself, I politely suggest practicing what you preach.

The onus is not on me to demonstrate causation; the reality based community is fully conversant with the facts and the preponderance of examples which elucidate Japanese society’s partial culpability. The onus is on those who seek to downplay or outright deny that social factors contribute towards conjuring these misfits into existence.
