I'm not exactly sure how cameras are going to deter someone intent on committing a crime, including wanting to harm passengers. If someone is that determined to engage in criminal acts, they are going to do it. Just because there is a camera, doesn't mean some nut job is going to see it and think "oh, there's a camera, better behave." Life doesn't work that way.
Unless there's an armed guard on every train and every station, a camera is not going to prevent some determined crazy person from committing crimes.

True. Anyway most of the criminals in Japan seem to actually WANT to get caught. I guess safest would be to xray everyone but then we will get similar situations like at the airport which I hope we wont head to.

First of all, there's no privacy expectation outside your own home so police state complaints are invalid. Second, for us men it's very positive since it will help when all those metoo kunts try to falsely accuse of 'groping'

They’ve been dithering over this for more than a decade. It is quite likely the attack on the Shinkansen would not have happened if they had gotten their finger out and installed them in the first instance.
