Kanagawa woman held for murdering two daughters

Police and mental health specialists are assessing the criminal liability of a woman who has confessed to stabbing to death her two daughters at their home in Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Wednesday night.

The woman, who has been named as 42-year-old Masako Nagato, lived with her 9-year-old and 9-month-old daughters in an apartment, police said Thursday.

The bodies of the children were discovered by the woman's mother who visited the apartment at around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, Fuji TV reported. Police say they believe Nagato was taking a bath with her two daughters when she stabbed them with a fruit knife. The victims were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.

During police questioning, Nagato was quoted by investigators as saying she had stabbed her daughters, "to protect them," Fuji reported. A doctor who spoke to Nagato told police that she had had a history of depression and inability to get good sleep, for which she had been receiving regular treatment.

However, the doctor was quoted as saying that Nagato had stopped attending hospital for treatment around a year and a half ago and had not been taking her medication.

I can't really blame the mom on this one. It's a mental health issue and more needs to be done to identify those who need help and more needs to be provided, so people like this mother don't fall off the rails.

Speechless...

Every day damn. If they knew she was sick and to a level where she needed meds, reg hospital checks and couldn't sleep, why on earth was she allowed to keep her kids? More so when she stopped going to the hospital? Miss your checks? Get your kids taken away. Unreal that they left those kids in her care with her mental history.

RIP little girls.

Again and again and again and again! When will they admit there is a huge issue with mental health (or lack of it) in Japan and start to seriously address it? A hundred suicides every day, parents killing kids, kids killing parents, babies showing up in garbage bins and coin lockers and that is only this week! Pull your head out of the sand Japan! You are sick and need help!

Where are the social services in japan? Apparently the lady has two boys also, it must be very hard on them Rest in peace liilte ones.

I hope that this issue is firmly placed in front of Wakio Mitsui TODAY, he is now responsible for health.

@ Disillusioned:

Unfortunately you're quite right. I've written in other news that there is a serious problem here.

People clearly need help, but on the other hand, others turn a blind eye to problems and just ignore it like it doesn't exist.

So the "doctor" knew that she had been off her meds for a year ad a half and felt no need to report it? He must have known what this woman was capable of and what kind of psychosis she had. And yes I'm sure even if the doctor did want to report it, there would have been no one to report it to.

Major system fail!

The system failed, the doctor just gave med's to her without trying to fix the problem and as others have pointed out knew of her problem and dangers. Another case of "just doing my job" head in the sand attitude that JP doctors and social works are taking.

If u r mentally sick and u r not able to handle the depression they why give birth to those kids? And anyone supporting this mentally sick barbaric mother should be sick as well, and where is the father? It is sole responsibility of parents to bring up their kids. And their is no excuse when u kill ur own kids, take her to same bath tub and be stabbed in same manner! Will you say yes to me if I say I'll stop my meds in exchange of killing my own kids???

There was a report released early last year stating that, 27% of Japanese adults have some sort of emotional or mental disorder. And, these are only the diagnosed cases. I am sure there are many more. So, what did the government do about it? Nothing! Not a bloody thing! The JR stations in Tokyo started playing relaxing music in the stations, used mood lighting and put up laughably childish posters. All this achieved nothing, of course. Mental health care in Japan is the same as the policing. It is done passively, if it is done at all. In this case it states, she had been treated for mental illness, but had stop treatment 18 months ago. Is there anyone responsible to check on this person? Or do they just wait till she shows up dead or kills her family? Obviously, in this case it is the latter. Unfortunately, I don't trust the mental or emotional stability of any Japanese person, adult, child or teen. I won't even stand on the edge of the train platform with people behind me. I've been here many years and have had to deal with many emotional wrecks in English classes because their so-called 'mental health care professional' recommended they join an English school cos it will help with their agoraphobia, schizophrenia and dementia. I actually had to call the cops one morning cos a student flipped out and starting punching the walls screaming that someone was following him. Keep your wits about you people. One in three Japanese adults is a potentially homicidal loon!

Wontond.....it's all mental health related issues undiagnosed!

wontond: "I can't really blame the mom on this one."

Well, yes and no. She's only the victim in so much as having mental issues, but it was HER choice to stop receiving treatment, and needless to say her choice to murder her kids. I do agree there needs to be a lot more help available for seeking help on mental issues in general, but still.

And this is the second story of a mom killing her child(ren) today!

Sorry, I have to blame the person with the knife. Mental illness or not, it is still them doing the killing.

Spidey: Read the article carefully. It only quotes a doctor who spoke to Nagato and does not imply that it was the doctor who was treating her.

EVERYONE has some sort of mental issue at some point in their lives, whether it's simply despair over losing someone or economic situations, or panic attacks, and of course there are those with very serious and long-standing conditions that require both medicine and observation to ensure proper care. I don't want to say that people in the latter category should not have children, but if they know, or it's known by others, but when you read about incidents like these you can't help thinking that said medical care should be a prerequisite to keeping custody of a child or children.

'Spidey: Read the article carefully. It only quotes a doctor who spoke to Nagato and does not imply that it was the doctor who was treating her.'

Let me rephrase...

So a "doctor" knew that she had been off her meds for a year ad a half and felt no need to report it? THEY must have known what this woman was capable of and what kind of psychosis she had. And yes I'm sure even if ANY doctor did want to report it, there would have been no one to report it to.

MmmK!?

Spidey's right: One of the biggest problems of this society is an unwillingness to call the police and/or report what they deem is abuse, or not keeping up treatment in this case. You ALWAYS read the after-the-murder reports of how neighbours hear noises or saw emaciated kids with bruises and worried about them, what you rarely if at all hear about is intervention. I can understand the problems that come with 'disturbing the wa', and the potential embarrassment in getting involved with something that is not your business, but we have to look out for each other, peeps. Clearly two little girls would have benefitted if we had, and likely the mother as well.

I once tried to report a neighbour causing problems to the residents in our building and instead of really checking it out the land-lady, and then police when I insisted, suggesting I move somewhere else to avoid the problem. The man was later caught for assaulting one of the people in the building, and when shipped off to wherever he went the land-lady of our building was stupefied about the damage he did to his room, which his 礼金 and 敷金 would never cover.

she had stabbed her daughters, “to protect them,”

She should have "protected" herself...

3 ( +3 / -0 )

What are the police doing wasting time "assessing her criminal liability"?? She confessed to the intentional killing of two children. You charge her with first degree murder! Period!! You then let her lawyer raise the various insanity defense or whatever other excuse she can come up with. Jesus, are the police so incompetent they think their role is to play expert witness and jury??

copy cat, ... yesterday news and today news were almost the same ... tomorrow whats next another killing child ?

This is really loony season. Each time I read a headline like this, I keep thinking that it is just a reprint or an update of a previous article.

OMG.... So so very sad... Rest in peace little ones!

Nobody knew this mother was off her rocker...? This doctor should be held liable for NOT taking any action, at the very least getting this woman hospitalized, knowing full well she had such an extensive history of mental illness. That's irresponsible and negligent.

Jcops will arrest a 75 year old driver who mistakenly steps on the gas, and hold him criminally liable, but NOT a doctor who sits by and does nothing at all to protect the lives of small children who are too young to take care of themselves and are relying on a mother with a history of mental illness... Makes complete sense... HERE in Japan...

Ok, Jcops, time to go back to hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil mode!

One word answer... YES!

I was thinking the same thing myself TokyoGas Very sad news. 9 years old... unbelievable. Sorry Japan but time to pull your head out of your ass and start promoting 'life lines' or 'help lines' if they exist here. Sometimes people just need to talk to someone about their issues. If doing so could prevent such an incident then do it. Many countries advertise and promote the use of such help lines and community group talks, etc. It works! Why doesn't Japan do it?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@combinibento Are the police so incompetent they think their role is to play expert witness and jury? Unfortunately, that might be correct in Japan. Once you're in court, only the sentence is handed down without you saying a thing and your lawyer advises you to apologies and accept it. There's no defense system here.

Wontond has it absolutely right, this woman NEEDED help and NOT to be released back into the community, NOT her fault and because of it two children are dead. Those giving thumbs down do not understand mental DISEASE.

You've made such claims before but never provide any links. I did a quick search and found an article stating that 27% of Americans have a mental disorder, but could not find such an article about Japan.

Under the More in Crime section, we read about one woman killing her daughter with a golf club, another putting a dead baby in a locker, and another stabbing two daughters in the bath. And some guys making curry about of someone.

I'm starting to look at people's faces differently lately. Most Japanese seem so placid and look to tired commit crimes - but the ones that aren't are really scary!

Mental illness is the most common illness amongst us as a species.

No matter what you say or think, Japan is still 100 times safer than a city in the country that you come from. Are you to the point that you have to take a taxi from the station because you are worried about being hacked to death and used as an autumn sushi special at the local Kura Sushi? If so, time to say sayonara to Japan.
