These incidents prompted the government to compile emergency countermeasures in October that mandate safety devices like buzzers or sensors to be installed on school buses.

No need for sophisticated sensors, just walk from front to back to ensure there's no kids are still on the bus.

Daycare aged seniors, taking care of daycare aged children, something is wrong with a system that allows this.

The school's former head was sentenced to two years in prison and a staff member to 18 months, both suspended for three years, for negligence resulting in death.

What a slap in the face of the greiving parents! These muppets get to walk free of any involvement?

Possessing marijuana, 5 years of prison. Murdering a parent's child (I don't care if it is unintentional) 2 years of prison. This system is ridiculous.

A similar death by heatstroke occurred in July 2021 involving a 5-year-old boy in Nakama, Fukuoka Prefecture. He was left in a nursery school bus for about nine hours before being discovered.

The school's former head was sentenced to two years in prison and a staff member to 18 months, both suspended for three years, for negligence resulting in death.

I am so sick of reading "sentence suspended for xx years" after every prison sentence in every crime news article, which is always too short for the crimes committed, anyway, even if they were to actually serve the time.

Suspend this foolish sentencing system and slap them with some hard time. Place needs to grow tf up.

I can tell you what DOESN'T work -- the countermeasure of a suspended sentence, since clearly that had no affection these guys checking in the latest incident.

Matsuda the Head of a nursery school should, must love every child under his care as his own child. Masuda should must be punished with a tough lengthy prison term and never be allowed to be head or teacher of any nursery or elementary school.

A former principal of a kindergarten in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan, was referred to prosecutors

Prosecutors? He should be referred to the trapdoor chamber.

WOW the safety measures are akin to the fox guarding the hen house. If one or more of the Daycare aged seniors are taking care of daycare aged children, this is bound to happen again. You have elderly people taking care of kids where you have both of them at times look for assistance. Young kids forget and so will the elderly. I think the best safety device would be one that doesn't allow them to close the doors until they have searched the bus from front to end where they will have to hit a switch at the back of the bus verifying there are no children on the bus once they have done a thorough check they hit another switch to verify that the sweep has been made which then send a signal to allow doors to close.

Will be given a suspended sentences even if this reaches trial. Just the same as the one in Fukuoka!

Child care in Japan: Largely unregulated, unmonitored, and no repercussions for bad actors. Parents have to be hyper-vigilant to make sure that daycares don’t negligently murder their children. It boggles the mind that this system is acceptable to anyone.
