Something I read in Gigazine’s coverage of the recent Special Equipment Exhibition & Conference for Anti-Terrorism (SEECAT) 2012 in Tokyo really piqued my interest.
On display at the Tanizawa Corp booth was a sporty looking sweater that also prevents damage from knife slashes. It could be the most comfy looking piece of armor I’ve seen.
The shirt is made from a material called Cut-Tex PRO designed by British body armor company PPSS.
Check out the video here.
The fabric is designed to meet the highest international standards of cut resistance, but the makers would like to emphasize that this is a “cut-resistant” not “cut-proof shirt.” So don’t buy one then start taking circular saws to the chest, or you’re gonna have a bad time.
The shirt on display at SEECAT 2012 was a zip-up with a collar that you can flip-up to protect your jugular. However, there’s also a turtleneck, long underwear and more available from PPSS.
Also the sweater on display was currently available in Japan but on release is expected cost around 25,000 yen.

Considering the extended stabby season in Japan, this might actually be a sensible dress choice for frequent commuters here.

this stuff looks really cool, but probably not that necessary for ppl not working in certain metal/ glass-production-related factories and law enforcement. but really cool.

Yeah, can you say awesome for an undercover cop, detective, or gang member for that matter.

i thought killers like to stab people, not slash them, unless it was at unprotected areas like the neck

Obviously, stab-proof material would have to be a lot thicker and stronger; I don´t think you will see stab-proof shirts any time soon. In the meantime, slash-proof is at least something.

Rule of thumb, know your surroundings and environment. That way you will know something is coming your way.

Slash resistance maybe useful especially if you are trying to evade or fight off some with a knife, but not useful if they stab you, since it's not stab resistant. There are some stab resistant vests that are concealable enough that is a bit affordable.

Just don't wear one when flying to USSA. Especially not with hiking spats. So gauche...

Gangsters gonna love this one.

They like stabbing in the neck here, so the turtle neck is a plus.

Terrorist have guns and bombs is this technology not a century behind time. I forgot as an American we know criminals do not obey gun laws.
