Police in Tokyo on Monday arrested a man in his 50s on suspicion of attempted murder and resisting arrest after he slashed a woman who was riding a bicycle.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 10 a.m. near Toritsu-Daigaku Station in Meguro Ward, Fuji TV reported. Police said the suspect attacked the woman cyclist, who is in her 60s, and then began walking along a street, brandishing a knife.
Witnesses called police and two officers, one a policewoman, rushed to the scene. The policewoman called out to the man to drop his knife while the policeman approached him from behind. However, the man started shouting and grabbed the policeman’s baton and swung it at him.
As the two struggled, a third man – a deliveryman for Yamato Transport – joined in the fracas and helped subdue the suspect with a few punches.
Police said the woman cyclist’s injuries are not life-threatening.
The suspect has so far not given any motive for his actions and has been rambling incomprehensibly, police said.

The female police officer's baton hits were very ineffective; seemed more like she was dusting the guy.
The police department should hire the Yamato guy.
Hallowed
If that were in America, he would have been executed on the spot with about 20 shots.
Luddite
The Yamato man was more effective than the two coppers.
goldorak
The Yamato guy delivered a few good punches! (someone had to do it)

Looked like 4 in total including the two police officers, Yamato deliveryman, and one other who jumped in at a late stage. Gotta say though... Well done to everybody who helped out there.
Just out of curiosity... the video seems to be age restricted on YouTube but watchable through JT. Is that ok?

Why is it so easy to get batons and guns off J-cops?

Sweet mother of Jesus. Two police officers, one has his baton taken off, the other hitting the criminal as if she were holding a Japanese comedian's inflatable hammer, and it takes a deliveryman to get the situation under control.

Hakman: While I agree with some points you make, I'm not sure the comment on how it would have likely ended in the US is entirely off-topic (although it is meant to be inflammatory). I likely would have been at least met with a "comparisons to other countries are irrelevant" comment. In any case, I think what the poster COULD have said, in a less inflammatory way, is that it is pretty amazing how much restraint the police in Japan show time and again in such situations. You almost never even hear about them drawing their weapons, and I think only once so far this year of one firing and killing a perp. Not the same in most other nations, and I think that is a big plus in most cases here.

i'm surprised there were only two police officers at the crime scene for a knife-wielding assailant. i jaywalk and about half a dozen cops come out of nowhere to check my wallet and ask me questions.

Nice one “Black Catman” - thank goodness they are everywhere.
The two police officers might consider enrolling in Monty Python’s “Defense Against Fruit” course. I thought jujitsu was invented in Japan.
BTW, the rumor that the delivery man had been an exchange student in the USA hasn’t been verified.

It's been a hot summer. Many nuts have fallen from the trees this year and it's only the end of July.
Pardon me, but the passive police response was a bit like keystone cops. They carry a long baton to disarm or disable an assailant, not to get in so close the perp can grab it and use it against them. The female police officer reminded me of my mother trying to break up a fight with a broom at my 16th birthday party. Ha! Ha! The cops need to take some late tackle lessons from the university coaches that were fired yesterday. They took way too long to get that nutter on the ground. The Yamato guy got a few nice 'rabbit punches' in, but only after the cop had wrestled the loon. All the Japanese police need to play rugby for a few seasons to learn how to flatten somebody in a flash without getting hurt. A good old 'Darwin coat hanger' would have sorted this creep out quick smart.

for the gun enthusiasts, this is the difference. this guy had a knife but if he had a gun it would have been much worse

The hero is the Yamato deliveryman! Hope he gets a raise! He lives the Yamato spirit!

Just showed this again to my martial arts class.
What on earth was the police woman doing?!
Proper training, please. Absolutely useless
Strangerland
Good on Yamato! Going that extra step in their service. He beat that guy down.
Kobe White Bar Owner
Totally agree with rawbeer, anyone trained should be able to put this guy down with a short combo. Hats off to the delivery guy, maybe think about a new job mate.
theFritzX
pure luck that no one else was knifed.
If that display is representative of japanese police training its cause for concern.

People are becoming unhinged in society. It is becoming more dangerous.

The guy in the green shorts is kind of funny. Mr. Yamato doesn't think twice, charges in and handles the guy with many blows to the neck and head. Mr. Green shorts starts, then stops, waits until the Mr. Knife Psycho is incapacitated, then runs up and delivers some blows to his lower back or buttock.
looks like Japanese cops need to spend some training time with the Mossad.

@Hallowed
That is a ridiculous comment, putting a negative light on America has nothing to do with Japanese crime!
Cochise
cops etc revert to their training when it hits the fan. Im wondering now if japanese policewomen are treated like 'nadeshiko' during their training and not taken seriously.
Her gestures with the long stick during this incident were completely innefectual.
Raw Beer
... or at Yamato!
Yeah, in the last second of the video we see another Kuroneko guy running in front of the camera, delivering a package.
Jeremy Wood
Interesting word 'subdued'. In Australia you get pepper sprayed and or tasered, both non lethal methods to incapacitate someone temporarily. In America you just get shot dead and sometimes in the back. A long stick in Japan seems a bit odd. May be its a Kendo thing..
theFritzX
And for the armchair experts praising the police in this case for not shooting him, consider a very possible scenario: He knife's the male cop, the femalecop is dispatched easily - her love taps with the long baton not withstanding - and theres no delivery man to provide backup. Plenty of innocent bystanders waiting to be attacked by a maniac with a deadly weapon, now possibly in possession of a police pistol. Real world, people.
smithinjapan
Another toorima. Kudos to the delivery man in particular, but also to the others who helped subdue this nut whom I'm sure had zero motive besides "wanting to hurt/kill someone to see what it was like", or "I was stressed out because of (insert not even first-world problem here)" as we see here day in and day out.
Vince Black
Police here really need to be trained in shooting more. They could've put a stop to it in one shot. Batons are near useless when used by inexperienced officers
