Charges filed against Konishiki for alleged assault over dog poo

Charges have been filed against Hawaiian-born former sumo wrestler Konishiki, 47, for allegedly assaulting a man in a dispute involving his dog defecating on the grounds of the man's residence, according to Japanese media reports.

NTV reported that the alleged assault took place at around 10 a.m. on Nov 12 while Konishiki and his wife Chie were walking their two golden retrievers in Tokyo’s Sumida Ward. The apartment owner's son, who is in his 30s, came up to the couple and berated them for allowing their dog to defecate on the grounds of a condominium complex where he lived.

Konishiki's wife reportedly told the man that it wasn't their dog that made the mess. Witnesses said that as the argument escalated, Konishiki approached the man and shoved him away, NTV reported.

The man later called police and filed a complaint. Papers on the case were sent to prosecutors on Dec 8, police said.

The man was quoted by NTV as saying that he might have let the incident go, but he was angered that Konishiki and his wife simply walked off after shoving him.

Konishiki, who is now a popular television personality in Japan, said on his blog Thursday that he was trying to protect his wife.

"It is true that I had some trouble with a neighbour while walking our dogs," the former ozeki said on his blog. "I became emotional while trying to protect my wife. I regret the incident as we failed to show thorough consideration. I apologize to my fans."

Konishiki and his wife simply walked off after shoving him.

I think this was in his best interest; would you like to have Konishski body slam your ass instead?

so shoving someone who is berating your wife is an assault? what a joke! he's lucky konishiki didn't do more than just shove him.

Hahaha, I just find this title, and the whole situation, really funny somehow. And if you really think about it, Konishiki could blow on someone and it would most likely be considered assault!

Prosecute the bastard!! Konishki is an overgrown bully! An arrogant Hawaiian who should be deported.

GW - True, although remember that one of the "he said"s is non-Japanese. So am doubting his story will be believed by many regardless.

Dog poop is a serious business.

Actually, isn't Konishiki a naturalized Japanese now? So it's just another of example of two Japanese having an argument over some dog poop.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

I'd rather have the dog crap on my front lawn than Konishiki, just quietly...

Konishiki is a huge lad - i would let him do what he likes....

Ha ha ha. Thank you Japan Today for changing the headline right after smartacus and I mentioned "dog poop". I guess that'll draw more hits.

What sort of loon would start abusing a sumo's wife? He is lucky he only got pushed and not squashed. Too many people in Japan fly off the handle at the first person they see for the simplest of reasons. Such a highly strung bunch!

Yea, everyone's a victim these days. Cry me a river. Neighbor sounds like a entitled twit with no pride. Was he injured? Doesn't sound like it. Imagine the phone call. "Hello police, yes, I'd like to report an assault, I was shoved after I yelled at another man's wife about dog poo" Pathetic

In Okinawa this would never have happened. There's dog poop everywhere and no one really cares. Stray animals making noises and causing lots of nuisances. I guess this is what is so different between mainland Japan and Okinawa. Anyway, it was just a shove, no big deal.

mikeinjapan... You can not deport Konishiki, he is a Japanese citizen.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Two Japanese arguing. If he did shove the neighbor, that is assault. Let him be charged and deal with a fine or a suspended sentence. If it is their dog's crap, fair enough on being called on it.

Many Japanese leap at the chance to take advantage of someone, especially a famous someone; they love to have the legal upper-hand here. Konishiki should have known you should never touch anyone here under any circumstances especially if you're a foreigner. He's in for a long haul with this, just like Asashoryu and we saw what happened to him.

Come on, there couldn't have been anything in it. If Konishiki had put any amount of strength or agression into it they would be interviewing the guy from a hospital bed. ....... Whod be dumb enough to yell at the wifee of a guy who could eat you for breakfast!! They should counter sue the guy for verbal assault and emotional distress. There is no evidence he was right about the dog crap anyway

He is BIG and FAT... get him off his feet and he is like a turtle on his back... take a fork-lift to get him back up

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Do Konishiki's Golden Retreivers actually get enough exercise? I doubt it.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

if the dog didn't do the poo then who did?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

vc - Another dog, of course!

especially if you're a foreigner

Newsflash!! He's Japanese.

I also doubt his nationality had anything to do with this guy getting angry. More like a rich target. Though again, if it was one of his dogs, fair enough for the neighbor to complain.

I hate people who don't clean up after their pets so I understand this guy's anger, but just don't mess with Konishiki ! He seems like such a nice guy, and I won't think less of him because of this incident.

His excuse sounds like his wife was responsible for laying the poo, not the dogs.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

He should absolutely never even let his dogs onto private property. Konishiki and his wife are 100% in the wrong here.

Great another person who tries and convicts someone based upon what they read on the internet. Reread the story, the "facts" are in dispute, but you automatically find Konishiki at fault. I hope you are never in a situation where YOU are convicted for something you may not have done or were responsible for.

The police have to investigate the incident because a report was filed and evidently there is evidence enough to pass it along to the prosecutors. If it really was just a minor incident and just a shove the cops would not have passed it along. There is more here that what has been reported. And Konishiki stating that he was protecting his wife says to me that the guy who pressed the charges was very probably out of line as well.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Let me get this straight, the owner of the complex falsely accuses Konishiki and his wife of an offense and becomes irate. Konishiki feeling threaten shoves the guy and he cries assault. Hmm, year ago this was considered a mild altercation as you see it numerous times on the streets where a drunk is shoving police and they are let go 10 minutes later with no charges filed. Makes you wonder! Oh, did I mention this was top news in the crime section over a woman who put a plastic bag over her 3-year old child’s head. Could be just the sequence of events as they happen.

"Konishiki, who is now a popular television personality in Japan, said on his blog Thursday that he was trying to protect his wife."

I think using the word "popular" in this sentence is a real stretch. I haven't seen him on TV in over a year and when he is on TV he's just stuffing food in his fat face...

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Looks like the other guy is fishing for a cash payout. Seriously, as some have already stated, if Konishiki really pushed him, that guy would have been air mail and would still be trying get back to Japan from China.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I'll bet the guy that confronted them is affiliated with a Yakuza group or something.... just another scumbag looking for a payout.

You obviously do not watch NHK.

Let's brown bag some doggy poo and drop it in front of his door, lite it on fire, ring his bell and run away.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Maybe the younger guy shouldn't have been using Konishki's rap CDs (with unintentionally funny lyrics about "this is your fantasy" and getting in a hot tub) to scare away stray animals outside his condo.

Talk about making a mountain out of poophill.

LOL. In reality he'd like to say I need the Japanese dough for a living. He has to beg the Japanese. There's no two way about it!

James Tanaka "get him off his feet." Okay, you do that for us, mate.

He's not Hawaiian, he's Samoan. Either way, if you ever lived in Hawaii, you know damn well you best not be messing with huge soles.

That dude is just trying to get his 5 min of fame. He was probably embarrased that he got shoved, then they walked away from him. Konishiki coulda done a whole lot worse to him so i think he should count his blessings. If someone is being disrespectful or aggressive towards my wife, I would probably react the same way....or worse.

There's a tendency to pre-convict Sumo guys, because of the scandals. Asashoryu had to resign after that brew-ha-ha with 'some guy', whom we later learned was a bozuzoku ne'er-do-well who promptly got into trouble again. Asa on the other hand went back to Mongolia, started his own investment bank and getting rich off of Mongolia's mineral wealth. Based on that, I'm inclined to believe that maybe Koni-chan was pushed too far.
