A 61-year-old man was arrested for assault on Tuesday, after he allegedly hit a 67-year-old male relative several times with a frying pan.
Police said Hideo Kawasaki, a farmer in Tamana City, got into an argument with his wife at around 3.30 p.m. and attacked his relative with the frying pan when he came into the house to intervene. The relative suffered injuries to his nose and face that are expected to take a week to heal.
Kawasaki told police he got angry when his relative came in and got in the middle of things. Police added that Kawasaki had been drinking.

How could he? What a terrible country Japan is. 130 million people and this is news?
IvanCoughalot
I can't stand it when people get in the middle of things either. This bloke got away lightly. I'd have hit him with a frying pan and then escalated to other Laurel-and-Hardy-style punishment.
Altria
Sounds like he had an axe to grind with this guy.
Altria
Apparently he was highly respected in the community.
It's like they say, those that climb the highest have the farthest to fall.
smithinjapan
At least it wasn't another family murder.
knackerz
Yet again we see the influence of voilent Tom and Jerry cartoons in society.

Like my mama always used to say: "get in the middle, get the griddle"

I know it`s not funny at all, but I get a mental picture of all this taking place and it kind of makes me think of one of those rubbishy Japanese entertainment shows in real life!
Wakarimasen
Frying pan is often used as weapon in domestic arguments. Or rolling pin.
TokyoGas
Glad it wasn't a hatchet.

TokyoLurker
they should have stocked more of french bread so it won't hurt when they snapped

Moral of the story is to not drink while holding a frying pan.

Was there something cooking in the pan, like fried chicken or bacon? Or did he have to reach up and get it out of the cupboard?
boboh
Outta the frying pan and into the fire for this gentleman.
dolphingirl
Was this relative his brother, his brother-in-law or, with so many out of control family fights are they now using the term 'relative' for the sake of simplification.

Sounds like a Japanese version of ma and pa kettle.

Frying pans are always a good choice if you don't have a knife or a gun. This guy must have been pretty agro to do that to a relative.

Frying pans are multipurpose and handy weapons. Being hit by a frying pan is much better than stabbed with a knife. wish a swift recovery for the victim.
mnemosyne23
Did the guy already have the frying pan in his hand in preparation to hit his wife? It certainly sounds like things were escalating to that level! Good on the "relative" (whoever he is) for intervening, and I hope he has a quick recovery!
Again, what is it with the elderly beating up (if not murdering) each other lately? I know Japan's population is aging, and crime isn't good regardless of age, but... wouldn't violent tantrums like this normally be the purview of idiot youth rather than wizened old age? Not that "elderly" necessarily goes hand in hand with "wise," but a younger person usually has more energy and muscle tension to actually WIELD the weapon.

Sounds like a monday night "Headline" from the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
This guy probably watched a rerun of the "THREE STOOGES".

I wonder what sound the frying pan made when it came into contact with the relative. CLANG, perhaps?
