All to often here. Nearly got nailed the other day pushing my kid in his stroller as cars park on sidewalks here. This is like dropping your wallet during a robbery unless it was a hot car. 2 years in the can.

At the scene, police discovered a license plate registered in Chiba, and are currently trying to locate the car to which the plates belong.

And, how long does this take? 30 seconds on a computer? Why has the loser no been arrested yet?

Yeah but I would be shocked if Japan's ward offices and driver registration systems are on computers yet...

The owner of the vehicle is probably thinking of all sorts of excuses now, like "I lend it to a friend" or something...

I suppose the driver was drunk and wonder if police can prove it.

Japan should make those plates easier to read and remember, cos they have the main bold number then city name, another number, and a hiragana character. what about different colours for different prefecures as a start..

They will catch the driver. That's one thing the J-cops are good at doing. They always seem to get the hit-and-run drivers.

Highly unlikely that it's a set-up (sunglasses down). If the woman was hit near a rice paddy, it sounds like it's in the country side. How many license plates do you see lying around, especially at the scene of a hit-and-run? Nope, although somewhat circumstantial, I would say it's pretty damning evidence. Drunk or not, the person didn't stop. Regardless of who is driving it will ultimately be the owner of the car who is responsible unless there is strong evidence of someone else driving.

It's a bit gory to contemplate, but I'm sure that if the numberplate was ripped off during the accident then there's very little doubt where it comes from, and the bloodstains alone should link it to the accident, so I doubt it's just a random number plate lying around. Unless of course the killer keeps a supply of random number plates lying in the back of his car to toss out his window as he runs down random grannies... that would be fiendish.

So the police are faced with a difficult decision. Do they go and arrest the vehicle's owner before or after they have morning tea?

timorborder - It's a big decision! I suspect the problem might be that the license plate is possible from a neighbouring prefecture or something and they need to actually travel to a different prefecture! In my experience this means major planning, and then there's the budget for omiyage to organise! It's a big deal leaving your prefecture.

What is a 76 year old woman doing walking out on a rice paddy lined road at 9 p.m.? Deathwish? It does not matter, not even if she suddenly veered into the car's path to cross the road without bothering to look over her shoulder. The driver would get railroaded regardless, so , they flee. Big surprise.

The cries for blood are bad enough, as if the authorities did not set the stage for people running, but being as we have WITNESSES to tell us what happened this time, it is extremely annoying not to see what they have to say included in this article.

While the details is too hard to read from afar, the 4 main mumerals are easy to read. If you go to the police and tell them those numbers and where it happened, it will not take long. Better than having 8 characters that take too long to read or memorize.

Standard procedure in the case of a hit and run: First, alert all body shops to report in if a car fitting the description comes in for front end or fender work. Second, track down the vehicle. The police have a big advantage in that a license plate was left at the scene. Unless the owner moved without updating his car registration, they've probably already visited him to look at the car.
