People who torture small animals can do the same to larger ones, ie humans. If he gets away with this, the justice system will show that they support animal cruelty.

...and even without it escalating to killing humans, causing suffering to and killing animals should never be brushed under the carpet. Wildlife should be protected.

Again another example of mental illness

Psychopath.

The man emerged as a suspect after police tracked an online message board post that read, "I killed a cat with poisoned food."

> The police searched his home in January and found images on his computer and smartphone of cats that ate the poisoned food,

the fact that he incorporated social media into it as well makes him even more messed up

A lot more of this goes on than known here in JP. I'm a cat supporter in my area, and have slowly come to know the amount of hatred and violence toward cats. It is quite a naive hatred as it is a human-made problem in the first place - and if you really think about it - just how bad are cats? They are accused of much more than they are responsible for.

If you can think about it from the cats' perspective, they are completely innocent! They are mammals like us, and have the same needs, feelings and emotions.

Violent guys like this murderer should be made an example of!

Life-long hatred of felines spurred on serial cat poisoner

It's much easier to blame a life-long hatred of cats than to address his mental health issues.

Not only he killed the cats but also kept photos on his computer of the ones he did. Man, that's creepy.

"Life-long hatred of felines spurred on serial cat poisoner"

S-purred... s-purred. Sad. Reminds me of the classic animated film 'Isle of Dogs'.

seems a piece of garbage and waste of air, unemployed at 29 too, I suggest force feeding him same poison instead of wasting time and resources to keep him locked.

This. Obviously, the authorities and/or the media cannot immediately determine if perpetrators suffer from mental illness. Perhaps longer-form journalism does a better job connecting the dots. Without question a large percentage of the lurid crime stories we read about here on a daily basis have a common root cause--untreated mental illness. Those who should be treated, medicated or institutionalized and are rather left to fend on their own. I wish the energy many use to call for punishment was used to push for better mental health care, i.e. prevention rather than punishment.

I wonder what cats ever did to him to make him dislike them so much. I'm sure he would be unable to explain his hatred in any coherent manner.

Just because he hates them doen’t mean hw has a right to kill them - simple minded nitwit!

My previous apartment had quite a few stray cats near it. Waking up at 2:00 am in the morning 3 times a week because cats are fighting outside or having sex isn't exactly a pleasant thing. Stray cats are a menace. Thankfully someone did something to get rid of them.

A life-long hatred of cats is a mental health issue.

jcapan, no need.. its much easier to just get rid of the crazys.

Alex, just the mentally disabled who commit crimes or all of them? I mean, are you saying you support what Uematsu Satoshi did or eugenics? I'm genuinely curious.

"I always disliked cats,"

What!

The police searched his home in January and found images on his computer and smartphone of cats that ate the poisoned food

What!!! As garypen said - psychopath. There's no mention in the article that says this guy is in custody. He's walking free?

Well firstly he didn't drown them he euthanized them, so you mean riverbank not river bed.

People who torture small animals can do the same to larger ones, ie humans.

Secondly you can think of feral cats as rats so people that poison rats don't go on to poison humans.

Wildlife should be protected.

Yes from cats !

Stray cats are a menace. Thankfully someone did something to get rid of them.

Dont know if you've got anything left but crows, but in Australia stray cats and dogs get poisoned and shot because they actually kill small birds and mammals and as a pack even small stock animals.

They are mammals like us, and have the same needs, feelings and emotions.

Hmmm tell THAT to the Whales and Dolphins !

Cats and particularly stray cats mind their own business seldom bothering anyone. The most would be a few screams from a fight in the quiet of the night. Stray ones are hungry. To lace their food and cause a painful death is cruel.

Why not just de-sex them? Or is humanity not so kosher anymore? I'm guessing you have never done anything to help the "problem" but whine about it.

Hmmm tell THAT to the Whales and Dolphins !

What is your point exactly?

This is Japan, you cannot compare the two. Cats are not a problem here and if numbers are getting too high in some areas (where it's not cool for tourism), it's because people are too lazy and selfish to join in on community catch and release programs. It's simple cause and effect for those with fully functioning brains.

Agentx I agree people like him and jcapan that think crazies are ok to wonder around and kill cats should be sterilized.

I think people who call for other posters to be sterilised are not quite right in the head, either.

Surprised such views pass for debate here.
