I was kind of hoping for a story of hacked up body parts....

(BTW, those urns of ashes have chins in them?)

Too many loveless marriages in Japan. Sad.

Gaijinfo - not sure if you've ever attended a cremation in Japan before but after the body has been burned the family members crush the bones into the urn so they are not normally crushed to the size of sand.

Chopsticks are used to pass the bones from one relative to another. This is why we don't pass food from chopstics to chopsticks! It is a rather gruesome activity as the staff member explains which specific bones they are. Not how I want to remember my loved ones.

This is pretty puzzling to me. I hear of people being arresting for flushing corpses down the toilet on JT several times a year. Do most buildings here use a septic tank or does sewage flow out from buildings? If the old man flushed her down the toilet then was the reason they found out was because she was in chunks and not just ashes? And lastly who goes digging through sewage pools without just cause? Was he suspected of tossing her out right after cremation and that's why he got busted?

@gaijininfo In Japan a lower temperature is used for cremations, which purposely leaves some bone material. It also leaves gold and platinum from dental procedures which when pooled together the city is allowed to sell to add to the city coffers. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2009/jan/14/japan-cremations-gold-metals

If he was so unhappy why didn't divorced? Something missing in this story.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

To some men, women are sweet and irresistible, while others find them demonic and revolting.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

There's nothing missing in the story. He had an unhappy marriage and now "he's glad" she's gone.

14 ( +14 / -0 )

@Matt: yeah not looking forward to attend any cremations here in Japan. I just want the casket to close and it to be over with. This bone passing thing is kind of macabre.

Not really a proper burial at sea....

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Wow! That is a serious hate issue! I know many couples in Japan that are totally unhappy. They sleep in separate rooms, don't communicate and never hang out together and, not just old couples either. Marriage in Japan is treated as a duty and not a choice.

He didn't need to resort to this. If he was so unhappy after so many years, he could've divorced her. Simple-

Yeah, simple except for the money problems, perhaps losing the house, perhaps having to move, having to learn how to cook, and the really fun one, when the spouse won't grant you the divorce, giving you a nice legal battle you might lose. Yeah. Simple.

@CrazyJoe

There is great variety among women, and men too! Some are sweet and irresistible and some are demonic and revolting! And some get to be that way for what their spouse has done to them! People who think either gender are all the same are likely to have mental problems or at least just are not too sharp.

Yeah, I had to do it last week. The staunch silence in black attire after the cremation incineration while the guy explains how to break bones if they are too big to fit in the urn (think of intact pelvis into a large coffeepot). So, as I duly followed his instructions and got roundly abused afterwards for angering my sister-in-law by breaking her collarbone and skull.

Yeah, Matt, not the way I want to go nor send anyone, if I had a choice

A Heathy loving sex life is not normal in Japan society. Japanese Women are rarely the initiator of sex or rarely do they dare to take control. The lack of talk or ono talk between both parties about the body sexually function between Men and women never take place and is deem Taboo. I have explain to my Japanese girl friend that such talk is not taboo and not to discuss it can cause disharmony in the a relationship and also in a Daughter Father relationship. I explain that it is a heath issue and not Taboo and should alway be discussed E.G I get a week end off and I have arrange for the family to visit a Onsen resort without conferring with the family first, only to find out that both my wife and Daughter have their periods. Japanese women will not mention this when you ask what is matter, Why are you both not enjoying the Onsen spa. The Japanese Wife does not want to explain the truth because it deem taboo, and make up some other excuse. The Husband get very annoyed because he has plan for a relaxing weekend enjoying the Onsen with the family. The husband show disrespect each time this occur because he is not wise to how the women body works. The resentment build up with both husband, wife and the daughter. The Wife and Daughter see her father has a domineering father and husband and loss respect for the husband and father. THat what lead to these non loving Marriages. That is my opinion anyway.

Sympathies for the guy, and for his wife.

Presiding at the internment was the Minister of Toilets.

Life was such a pain before she died.....In all honesty there appears to be no let up after she died, his spouse even tormenting him from the toilet bowl. Maybe he should request police protection...........

Appalling

And he turned himself in.......?

Horror movie plot...

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

I assume it was flushed down a Toto toilet that wouldn't clog.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

From the headline, I thought we were looking at a Hollywood style psychotic murderer. Then it turns out we are just talking about ashes from cremation. OK, that is tacky, yes, but is it even a crime? It is a non-story really.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

That's some serious hatred!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

It sounds like the guy just wanted to move on with what's left of his life but she's come back to cause him grief once again! Poor bugger!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I just asked my wife if she goes first if she is cool with something like this, just got the evil eye! But when I said it wouldn't bother me if I check out first, then she.....................SMILES!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

GW I think you have just given you wife a cunning plan! please report in for the next few weeks mate!! we just need to check your whereabouts

2 ( +3 / -1 )

This bone passing thing is kind of macabre.

When I heard of this I thought so too but in practice found it to be the opposite. I did this with my wife at her grandmother's cremation. In our western societies death has become a taboo. I interpreted this act as a gesture of love and care for a loved relative, and appreciated that I was able to do this even after she had died. Who better to place the ashes in the urn than your family, rather than the impersonal hands of funeral staff.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The marriage was down the pan anyway.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Yeah, simple except for the money problems, perhaps losing the house, perhaps having to move, having to learn how to cook, and the really fun one, when the spouse won't grant you the divorce, giving you a nice legal battle you might lose. Yeah. Simple.

But look at the mess he's in now. @ 68, what way to come to the end of the road. See. If they'd divorced. . . Oh let's say 25 years ago, he might be a happier camper despite having to have went through the legal battles, foreclosure & cooking lessons.

See. My point of view is better than yours. He'd be guilt free. Simple-

Who says he has any guilt for what he did?

And this way he got meals cooked for him for 25 years.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Wc626, maybe they had children back then who needed a mother and father willing to sacrifice their own happiness a little for the sake of family unity...?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

If he was so unhappy why didn't divorced?

Maybe because he was in love and they were having some love-hate dramas over the years. From what I get people in arranged marriages are more indifferent than resentful, they can simply avoid spending time together.

See. If they'd divorced. . . Oh let's say 25 years ago, he might be a happier camper...

Or a stalker harrassing his ex and her new partner...

Or they go their separate ways and find happiness with someone else... it's not unheard of you know.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

She must have really given him the sh*ts.

Right. I'm not proud that Americans have an extremely high divorce rate. . . But we once we "move on" we're a happier. Free too. See. Look at this guy now Complete misery. Coulda' fixed it 25-30yrs ago.

“I had hatred mounting against her,” the man, whose name was not disclosed, was quoted as saying. “Life was such a pain before she died.”

& now the authorities are considering to charge this guy. Lovely.

More importantly why the supermarket toilet? why not the toilet in the park or just chuck it into the river?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Anger is good to deal with. At least it wasn't murder.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I wonder, in their married life, why he couldn't give his wife the cold shoulder once and for all, and get a divorce. Now the proverb "Love and hate are two sides of the same coin" comes to mind.
