Police in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, said Tuesday they have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting his 50-year-old father by hitting him on the head with a sake bottle.
The incident occurred at around 11:15 p.m. on Monday, local media reported. Police said the man, a company employee, and his wife had been visiting his parents at their home and all four were drinking alcohol.
At some point, the man and his father got into an argument and the man hit his father on the head with a sake bottle with such force that it broke the bottle. The man’s father suffered a gash to his head.
The victim called police and his son was arrested on the spot. Police are questioning the family about what caused the dispute that led to the assault.

I read this, and my brain goes to the many American Western movies I've watched where this "break-a-liquor-bottle-over-the-head" saloon fight happened - Usually to the unsuspecting "good cowboy hero", who then instantly pops up off the floor and proceeds to completely pummel the "bad guy" to near death.... Ah, Hollywood.
I hope the father wasn't seriously hurt.

Yes, this is Japanese news coming through with one of its favourite topics, (domestic) violence involving a weaponised everyday object, inviting everyone to speculate on the worthiness of the object as a weapon.
Remove the reference to the sake bottle, and this is a non-story. Even though it definitely assault and possibly attempted murder. For a victim of an assault or attempted murder, the crime itself is far more important than whether an unusual weapon was used.

As a black belt in my own martial art of Marc-Do, I can accurately confirm a sake bottle is indeed a dangerous weapon. Martial artists and normal citizens alike should only use sake bottles as a last resort in self defence. Thankfully, the father survived, albeit with a new gash. This life lesson might help father and son become less misogynistic and bury the hatchet. They should also probably bury the sake bottles.
