A 20 year-old man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of possessing a hand-made gun, in violation of the Swords and Firearms Control Law and laws prohibiting the manufacture of weapons. Police said the unemployed man from Moriya City misfired the weapon and seriously injured himself, and was arrested after his release from hospital.
The gun was made from a commercially available iron rod, 17 centimeters long and with a diameter of roughly 3 centimeters, in which he put gunpowder. The man is reported to have said that he was interested in guns and made the weapon after seeing a show on TV about how they work. He told police he mistook the front end of his weapon for the back, and ended up shooting himself.
According to police, the man had the gun with him when he was under the Joban Expressway in Moriya City on the evening of May 2.

It's bad enough accidentally shooting yourself, as accidents do happen, BUT, I would never admit to not knowing which end of the gun I was looking at. What a dummy!!
romulus3
hahahahahahahahahaha! Oh man, what a stupid fool.
fatloser
Where'd he get the gunpowder??
fatloser
Maybe he made it or...bought it from a foreigner!!!
Disillusioned
If they were to have an award ceremony for the biggest 'idiodist' this would take the prize. I'm just glad he shot himself and not someone else. Twit!

This would make for a great "cartoon of the month."

He would be an Honary "Darwin Award Winner" since his stupid actions did not take him from adding to the "gene pool" unless he shot himself below the belt.

i propose he sees the documentary again so he know what the front and back of a gun is.

i wonder if commercially available iron rod will be banned now
fds
how did he put gunpowder into an iron rod?
sensei258
Darwin's theory of natural selection at work. Next they will be banning metal "rods" (but I suspect they mean pipes, since it's hard to stuff something into the center of a rod)
BBLeo
He should join inventors club. Japan will have to ban all the metal pipes, including in kitchens, and toilets. He said he made a mistake, I wounder if judge will also make mistake when sentencing him?

The way I figure it HE watched an episode of MacGuiver and attempted to make a home made blunderbuss. He stuffed some cotton and scraps of paper in one end and a few bent spoons in the other. Then he ....it gets tricky here..he must have had a fuse located in the center of the rod and he lit is with a match or lighter...(no holding that over a gas burner!!) and he got his ends mixed up. I suppose he really should have bought some yellow paint and used it on the business end of his contraption. That way he'd be able to tell in a pinch or in the dark (doesn't get so dark in Japan..it's the neon-there's a ton of it) which end he should be pointing at the voices or his deadly enemy!!

Just glad he shot himself instead of anyone else. He is not dead and maybe, just mabe he will learn from his mistake and not make another gun or firearm at all.

Thank god this fool shot himself with this home-made gun rather than shooting innocent people with it. This fool sounds like a real looser! Out of work so he is wasting his time making guns? GO FIND A JOB LOOSER!

Please tell me this guy has no children.

A regular Einstein? This guy is one very lucky dude. Should have thought a bit about weapons handling as well. 3cm as a bore is rather dangerous, considering that most weapons these days are calculated in millimeters, 7.62 or 5.56. I also wonder how much gunpowder he put in the barrel. A decent wad of powder would have made any projectile coming out of the barrel do so at some speed. Depending on the volume of powder, he might have managed to shatter his shoulder even if he had the weapon pointing the right way.
With regard to gunpowder, it is not that hard to make. All you need is.....

he really was packing a rod
Altria
Wow, he certainly made a huge blunderbuss. Hope he gets baretta soon.
kawabunga
Wonder if he will try that again!

It is November and he shot himself on May 2nd. "Swift Justice".

Thank you fatloser. While many here think this guy is an idiot, how many of them could even actually make the gun? Sorry, but the guy is one up on most of us here. And I am not sorry if I busted anybody's little bubble of smugness. Some people really need to get some humility.
BlackFlag
making a gun doesnt make him a genius, just someone with internet access and too much free time. making a gun and then accidentally shooting himself because he didnt attach a handle certainly doesnt make him a genius. In fact I'd say I was definately one up on this guy because I was smart enough not to want to make a gun and have not spent the past week in hospital and a police cell. my bubble of smugness is impenetrable in this case.
