Man arrested after stabbing eldest son during fight

A man was arrested for attempted murder after he stabbed his son during a fight at his home in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, on Sunday.

According to police, Shigemi Oyama, 72, and his eldest son Atsushi, 46, were arguing when he allegedly stabbed his son in the right side of the chest with an 11-cm-long knife. Afterwards, Oyama called 119 and Atsushi was taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition, police said Monday.

Oyama was quoted by police as saying: "Atsushi always skips work and pesters me for money, and we're constantly fighting about it. We fought about it again tonight."

I agree the dad may have feared telling the son to leave, and considered a first strike his best bet. Or they may have been fighting and that was really self defense. No one here can know.

Good wakeup call for the son. Maybe he will leave the house now and try to live on his own. Hopefully the father will get off lightly.

@Monoflow: It's not a murder case (at least not yet). The son still lives and is in stable condition. The charge was ATTEMPTED murder.

I agree that the father might have a self-defense case depending upon the circumstances that weren't made available in the article.

Sounds like self-defense...

A 72 year old man and 46 year old guy...

Unless this forty-year old is in a wheel-chair...

The key words here, "during fight," it doesn't say argument, it says, "during fight..."

Fight = Physical Altercation

And a 72 year old man, unless he was an Olympic boxer, or Tae kwon doo fighter, he has a right to defend himself, in his own home when faced with a much stronger and younger opponent...

Now, if he was laying in wait, for his son to walk through the door, and then jumped and stabbed him, it's an entirely different matter.

It's unfortunate, it was his son..

Sounds like he'll be just fine in a few weeks, and now he's learned a valuable lesson, don't mess with dad...

And was there alcohol involved? This story just does not seem to show all the factors in the father's sudden outrage nor the pain that he may have had then or down through the years with a son that apparently has brought him a lot of pain. As a parent I can't imagine doing this to my son. NEVER!

How about just kicking the dude out?! Why the stabbing? Just get adamant that no more money is going to flow. One thing that needs to be considered is the brainlessness of the life here in Japan, especially for the young. They have NO WHERE to go, nothing to do, and now no money to make options for themselves. I can only pray that when the holy grail of income dries up for the foreign community here, they have saved enough to go back to their home countries and survive for 6-months to a year, and see how difficult the job market is there! When the money runs dry here, this place can be suffucating to say the least, even for Japanese. I believe that's an underlying point of this story that no one is touching on. This culture, for all its wabi-sabi and ware-ware, is in deep trouble once the money chain stops rolling in anyone sectors dimension. Try handling the deep recession and no jobs situation that exists today, and its everyone for themselves, follow the system and if your lucky you'll get protected by it, if not your french toast period kit kabodle.

this 46yr I bet was making his old man hemorage $$$$ & the only way the old man cud survive was to either kill him or scare the 46yr old loser enough he wud never return, hopefully this will have done the trick!

How do we know that the son never left? He might have been on his own, got laid off and was forced to move back home. Local job market was crap and the son hated working at the Yoshinoya on the corner. Decided to play hooky a few too many times for ol' dads liking. Just possible scenario. Guy is most likely a shletered loser who prefers the safety net of living at home with the folks. Reminds me of my pothead older brother who has never lived on his own.

It's a murder case, whatever the reason might be ... It must be hard for the old man to find out after 46 years of raising his son, that he brought up a probably punk ...

very sad. you cannot teach a old horse a new trick. a son should adore his parents and a father should love his children. why such love evaporates? basically when the trust is not there. it should be taught early. parent should be good role models early in their children's life

BurakuminDes, I disagree, I would give him father of the year for standing up to his no-load son! Not sure if I would have shanked him, but it seemed to be effective.

No jail time. If he felt threatened, he has the right to defend himself. Should have thrown him out 26 years ago.

Thank goodness the son survived. These cases seem all to common. It seems as though the son was still living at home since the father was aware that he was skipping work. The 72-year-old father was clearly not physically unhealthy since he had the power to stab his son with a knife. Which leads me to ask the obvious question--why was this 46-year-old man living at home? I can only understand this if the son has some mental disorder or health problem but since he had a job it shows he was able to earn a living himself.

This is so disfunctional. The son is irresponsible and relies on his father for money. The father, who only encouraged his son to be dependant on him, should have kicked him out long ago. Plus, if you keep having the same fight over and over again, it's time to find a solution and this was not it.

I realize incidents like this are newsworthy and that 'if it bleeds it leads' but why do such stories so often have to be the first thing the reader sees when coming to JapanToday?

hmmmmmm....., Shouldn't a 46 year old man be able to btter protect himself against a 72 year old man.

Anyways, I think the son should forgive the father and not press charges. If he does and the father goes to jail, who will he be able to bum money from?

Give this numbskull father of the year! Silly old fool, dementia must have got to him. He can now contemplate why he wanted to become a murderer as his spends his final years in the slammer!

Pushed to the limit and he came out swinging. Not a good way to deal with the situation but I understand. Another case of bullying that was dealt with harshly.
