Man arrested after taking mother hostage in Tokyo

A 31-year-old unemployed man was arrested on Friday afternoon after taking his 58-year-old mother hostage for four hours at their apartment on the first floor of a condo in Edogawa Ward. Nobody was hurt in the standoff, police said.

According to police, the man took his mother hostage at 8:05 a.m. just after she called police telling them he was threatening her with a knife. Police negotiated with the man for five hours and he finally gave himself up at 12:10 p.m.

Police said the man was incoherent, mumbling things like “ Don't cremate dead people because they are the same as living people. If you don't stop cremations, I will kill you.”

The man and his mother live together at the apartment, according to police.

Time to retire this guy, his mother hostage? Might want to check the rice he has been eating.

Oh, yeah! What a classic! Bring out the straight jackets! We have another one!

Afterthought - importing and supplying straight jackets could be quite a lucrative business in Japan. I saw at least four worthy candidates on the way to the station this morning.

How does one take your own mother hostage in your (or her) own apartment? Did I take my wife hostage last night cause we sat together and watched tainted rice explanations on TV?

More on topic, time to find mental health professionals for a certain 31-year-old unemployed man.

Methinks it was time to kick the chick out of the nest a long time ago.

It sounds like he is the number one son of the family and had some issues he couldn't resolve by himself. Maybe he was upset because she didn't cook him breakfast. Worse thinngs have happened with family arguments. This story will unfold later to find out the man did not have control of his mental state or he may have been under the influence of illegal drugs.

My mother would be the LAST person I would take hostage. Your mother is the most likely person to smack you upside the head for doing really dumb stuff. Wouldn't you want to get AWAY from your mother...what is with this new generation anyways?

"Don’t cremate dead people because they are the same as living people. If you don’t stop cremations, I will kill you"

What would really get on this guy's nerve, is if the family of anyone he came to kill requested a cremation.

You know what, I can somewhat sympathize with this guy. Have you ever experienced a Japanese cremation? It's one of the saddest, cruelest things I ever saw.

First, they cremate all the flesh of your loved one, leaving a pile of bones. Then you use giant chopsticks to select the bones that you want to keep forever in a jar.

I hope I never have to see the skull of a loved one.

yeah, I always thought that was pretty screwed up. not something I ever hope to do

Gosh if did something like that to my mother, she'd kill me, certainly never speak to me again

I have got to feel sorry for the parents who end up with kids like this!

A part of Japanese culture I always thought was silly. What can anyone gain from a grown man living at home with his parents? It just seems so stupid to me. Grow up dudes.
