Man arrested after using AI to 'destroy' censor mosaics in Japanese adult videos

Kyoto prefectural police officers have arrested a 43-year-old male resident of Takasago, Hyogo Prefecture. With this, they brought an end to his nine-month spree of destruction.

What kind of destruction? Mosaic destruction.

Mosaics aren’t recognized as protected species in Japan, and their lack of physical form means that destroying them doesn’t qualify as vandalism. The problem, though, is that the man had been destroying the mosaics in adult videos.

A little background for those unaware (or aware but not in a position to admit it): Despite Japan’s unabashed appreciation of sexy entertainment, the showing of uncensored sexual intercourse is prohibited in adult videos, and so the performers’ naughty/fun bits have to have an obscuring mosaic placed over them. However, while there’s no shortage of unusual fetishes in Japan, mosaics themselves aren’t necessarily one of them。

So most viewers would rather watch adult videos without mosaics, if only there were a way. That’s what the man from Hyogo, who has admitted to the charges, was offering. Through his website, the man took requests from users for what adult videos they’d like to watch mosaic-free, then went to work making their dreams come true.

However, a key point is that unlike the scrambled broadcast pornography in some countries where the distortion effect is separate from the performers’ image and can be removed once payment is confirmed, in Japanese adult videos the mosaic itself is part of the image, and not something that can be peeled off to reveal the action going on underneath.

So while what the Hyogo man did is being called “mosaic destruction” in Japan, “naked creation” would actually be the more accurate description. Using an AI machine-learning program, one originally designed to enhance security camera footage or restore old/damaged film images, the man was able to estimate and recreate what the uncensored image would have originally looked like, then place that over the mosaic. In other words, he wasn’t wiping away the blurry mosaic of the censored version, but adding an animated overlay of his own, one that looked like uncensored sex, on top of the censor mosaic.

In the eyes of the law, though, the difference between removing the mosaic and using AI to create a naked overlay is essentially porn-tay-to/porn-tah-to, and the police arrested the man for display of obscene electromagnetically recorded media (a fittingly quaint-sounding charge for a justice system that requires mosaics on adult videos).

He’s also facing charges of copyright violation, since his destruction/creation editing wasn’t something he did just out of a love of exposed genitalia. After he was done editing the videos, he’d post samples of the mosaic-less versions on his website and offer the completed versions for sale. According to investigators, between December and August he sold roughly 12,000 videos to 200 registered users of his site, earning approximately 11 million yen.

That works out to an average of 60 videos per person, priced at 917 yen each.

It’s worth noting that the legal problems the man faces don’t seem to include any for the actual video editing itself, only the acts of distributing and selling them, and had he kept the private part-showing videos he created private, he probably could have avoided any trouble with the law.

All I really have to say about this article is that this man is way too talented to be catching a charge over what he did. Essentially, he took censored porn and made it uncensored with the creation of his own imagination and technology. It wasn’t even that he was just wiping away the image that covered up the parts that were censored, but took that image away, and literally recreated the image that was inside his head of what would be under that censored part. That’s actually insanely talented of him but I feel like he is totally wasting away his talents on something like that. He could be into graphic design or work marketing for a big company with his type of skills. It’s a shame that he’s now facing potential time over something as stupid as porn (in my opinion). Maybe he will learn his lesson and realize that he can use his skills in a more productive and effective way for society- something that will actually make a difference for people and a community.

Even if you remove the mosaic , you won’t see everything . All the action is hidden by bushy black hair.

HAIR! The difference between 'Porn" and 'pseudoPEDOphilia'...

@Jim & englisc aspyrgend;

Thanks for the laugh. When I lived in Japan, back in the pre-internet days, my neighbor attended a weenie-fest and even brought me some weenie shaped candy.

Pics or it didn't happen.

The only thing weirder than the pixelation rule is the fact that some people actually BUY pixelated videos, when (a friend informs me) unpixelated stuff is available gratis online.

Maybe Uniqlo could launch a range of pixelated undies.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Hahahahahaha.

This is the most ridiculous story I have read in a long time!

Talk about irrational, hypocritical, puritanical behaviour, like Jim pointed out there is no moral consistency if you allow a penis festival to flagrantly display oversized penises in public, and as for the pre-pubescent pornography that is perfectly legal!!!!!

Give me a break.

You can download anything anytime without any government intrusion into your private life from the internet.

Good morning Japan.

This is the 21st century.

Don't waist my tax money on Don Quihote!

So he just needs to package up his code and sell that instead then?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The article says most if not all the charges are due to copyright infringement and for-profit distribution. I think if he did it for his own private use it would have been fine since no one else would have known. Freely distributing them also probably would have landed him in hot water with authorities sooner or later.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Destroy? Nothing is being really destroy, those movie can be put back to original if necessary.

To be exact, de-censored images are re-created or fabricated through AI analysis. They are not identical to originals. Thus I think the copyright infringement should be the primary charge against him.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Yes, tricky…lol But anyway, the AI needs of course beforehand quite a number of not-mosaic sample pictures to calculate a probable overlap pattern.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

That is kind of hilarious. How do they define "destroying mosaiques" anyway? Are they artworks now?

Also I wonder what the porn consumers are expected to see.... are there any surprises underneath the squares? Weird.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

There is really no point to it anymore. If one wants to see uncensored adult videos, one can just see adult videos from elsewhere. If they stopped censoring, it could open up new opportunities for international sales for the industry.

9 month spree of destruction haha ?

i guess the officers involved were taking their time studying the details before they apprehended this evil genius and brought him to justice.

once again Japan and our eyeballs are safe from the decrypted and depixilated gooey naughty parts of the adult entertainment industry.

It is sad that a country finds that the human body au natural to be obscene.

Such an attitude is antiquated and immature, and leads to any number of societal ills via repressed sexuality such as child molesting, sexual assault, and may be responsible for the declining birth rate.

Mosaic work can be Risky, …especially in Japan where laws are ambiguous and subject to ‘selective enforcement’.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

What a legend! he should have used crypto and the darkweb though to "COVERUP" his private parts ...:)

in the past the genitals on imported magazines were covered with black marker-like pens

Yeah, even the classic depiction of Adam and Eve illustrating the cover of my "Collected Works of John Milton" was defaced with a black box. As a newcomer to the Land of Wa I had no idea what the purpose of the box was until I read about the practice of using high school kids and retirees to censor the "smut" coming into Japan from overseas.

Japan the country that prosecuted an artist for making a kayak that was shaped like her privates, now arresting this HERO man who made the life for thousands better by bring them joy…

All this while having the penis celebration festival openly where penis statues are displayed on the public roads with people dancing and cheering around ( mosaic free )…such hypocrisy!!!

Lesson learned. Here we have a hero without a Looter to bend the rule book/ law man in his favor. Mori Gakuen for one, would like a word.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

Regardless of the reasoning and the ethical discussion here, what he did is actually illegal. A friend told me (and I have never seen or done anything myself ;) ), that in the past the genitals on imported magazines were covered with black marker-like pens and people made good use of alcohol and earbuds to clear matters up. That was just as illegal.

HAHAHAHA!!! Brilliant mate!!

But you can always buy a magazine with underage girls in Bikinis.. Go figure.

Um, none of these Rocket scientists have heard of pornhub?

I wouldn’t know it myself, mind you. A “friend” told me about it once.....

You beat me to it. By the way, its not the only one. pornzog is another, and even the mainstream dailymotion also allows complete nudity and the genitals can be seen, so this is just a stupid rule, but considering the age of the people who run this country I am assuming they don't know how to use a computer and most still use Garake flip phones.

Mosaics are the pathetic remnants of censorship imposed by the puritanical right-wing mentality of Showa militarist control freaks. Such "traditions" are hard to shuck when they function as bit and bridle to keep officialdum in the saddle on their high horses.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Why does Hentai not offer the choice to have censored or uncensored videos or manga. Seems like a marketing issue to me. It's not like they don't exist elsewhere.

Given that the police prosecuted an artist who made a canoe that resembled her vulva, it is hardly surprising that this guy was prosecuted too.

If he relocates to a more tolerant country he can do the business remotely.

Or maybe his clients will work out that there is a thing called the internet where uncensored videos are available, apparently.

24 ( +26 / -2 )

Good lord there are plenty of uncensored Japanese porn videos online, luckily prosecutors don’t know how to use the internet? Another stupid antiquated law. Should I have pixelated that comment?

25 ( +28 / -3 )

He seems like a pretty talented guy. It’s a shame he used his talents for nefarious purposes.

-4 ( +9 / -13 )

Well intentioned, I guess. But when you tangle with copyright law, you're gonna get hit.

This isn't about removing censorship from a movie, it's about profiting from the theft of the movie, and there's no way the JAV industry is gonna just let that happen.
