Police in Tokyo have arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of abusing his 17-month-old son by shaking him violently. The infant remains unconscious in hospital.
Yuki Negishi, a company employee, was arrested on Oct 23, Fuji TV reported. Police said he has admitted to abusing his son at their home in Ota Ward and quoted him as saying he forcefully shook his youngest son because “he wouldn’t listen to him.” Negishi lives with his wife and two sons.
Police said they responded to an emergency call at around 9 a.m. on Oct 23 about a child “lying limp.” The child was unconscious and taken to hospital. No injuries were visible on his body, but the hospital notified police that the child may have been abused.
Ota Ward officials said Monday that an employee of the children’s welfare center visited Negishi’s residence on June in response to a call that the child may have been abused. The center did not say who made the call. The welfare center and ward officials continued to check on the family until September.

So sad. Anger management or lack thereof is serious in Japan. When will the Japanese gov address this societal problem rather than hide it under the carpet?

So many cases of child abuse in Japan. And the government wonders why the birth rate keeps declining. The copious amounts of overtime people do here results in them not spending enough time with family, so they're basically strangers to their own kids. That and the fact that the aforementioned overtime means they're stressed out of their minds so any little thing will trigger a burst of anger. Kids require a lot of patience; that's just how things are. A lot of parents here just don't have the mental strength and capacity to give their kids their undivided attention what with work taking up all of their time and then some. Japan's society needs a huge overhaul but I doubt any proper change will go into effect considering how a) things get done at a glacial pace in this country and b) Japan is borderline allergic to change.
Poor little one. I hope he recovers and is sent to a loving home. He deserves nothing less.

Yuki-kun, I suspect your wife and boss don't listen to you either, and papa felt the same when he beat you. I hope this ends the vicious cycle: that 'shiawase' for your wife is her kids' happiness, not your pay-packet.

My daughter is 17 months old. I couldn't imagine that shaking/abusing her would be an acceptable way to handle her not listening to me. Raising a child is hard, but there is never an excuse to abuse your kids.

Why??? A 17 month old child doesn't listen??? Big shock! It's not like kids of that age have the biggest attention span anyways. Makes me sick reading these kind of stories.
