not questioning the police report but I guess it was just a slight reddish rash that they'll report as a "minor injury."

The old codger was in a hospital, ie private property, the doctor would not be doing his job properly if he allowed his patients to be exposed to possible harm from a potential spreader.

It isn't all about the law. Common sense and good manners comes into it (or not, if you're an entitled old codger with a chin-nappy). If he doesn't want to wear a mask, he should stay out of the hospital. If he wants the doctor to see him/treat him, then he needs to follow the doctor's directions.

Where do you get the "possibly save his life" from? The masks are not supposed to protect the wearer (which they clearly do not do), but rather to protect others by slowing air flow.

While I don't condone the use of violence to settle any disagreement, this is what you get when you force people to do things they don't want to do. That said, I you must be at a place where a mask is required don't be a baby and comply, if you don't have to be at that place just leave.

Such ‘to hell with everyone except me’ selfishness is a corollary of Japan’s enthusiastic embrace of 痩せ我慢 frugality, and aversion to providing its people with anything more than retirement pensions completely inadequate for anything but the satisfaction of basic needs.
