Police in Chofu, Tokyo, have arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s as she walked home last month.

According to police, the incident occurred at around midnight on July 9, Kyodo News reported. Police said Shogo Ueda, a bank employee, approached the woman and asked if she had any water because he “felt sick from drinking too much alcohol.” The woman said no and and kept walking.

Police said Ueda a followed the woman for about 300 meters before grabbing her arm from behind and groping her breasts. The woman broke free and ran to a nearby police box.

Police said Ueda was identified after an analysis of street surveillance camera footage. Police quoted Ueda, who was arrested on Tuesday, as saying, “I touched her breasts on an impulse.”

I'm glad that the woman was able to get away and get to a police box. As for the perpetrator, I have absolutely nothing to say to or for him.

Being a woman anywhere is fraught with danger, but in Japan, never be alone and avoid crowded public transport.

I agree there are dangers everywhere and more needs to be done, but your comment is also a huge exaggeration. For example, to put things into perspective, the US has an average of over 1,200 reported major sexual assaults per day. Most don’t even make the local news and certainly never the national news.

In my area, police boxes close at 5pm, she was lucky.

I thought Japan along with neighboring South Korea and Taiwan is one of the safest countries in the world without these kinds of worries.?.?

Here is an easy solution, how about they give these kind of criminals the death penalty via the firing squad.

I totally agree. Women are at a disadvantage when it comes to walking home at night in Japan when it comes to safety issues. One has to wonder, why would a guy in Japan stalk a women just to touch her upper body parts? Even when I have been drinking, I never think of doing this. My thoughts are going home to sleep or watch a movie. Not to stalk a women who I do not know just to get a cheap thrill. And many people in Japan may or may not know that many of these kind of illegal activities are never reported to the local Police in Japan.

Yet we have 'allegedly' in the headline?

Relatively speaking, Japan is still one of the safest places in the world. Instead of focusing on one headline, that would likely not have even made the news in most industrialized nations' major cities, try taking a look at actual statistics of sexual assault crimes, murders, kidnappings, rape, armed robbery, etc, in other so called "first world" countries, then comparing those statistics, per capita, with Japan. Maybe start with your own country of origin, if it's not Japan.

I'm not sure where JT ranks among top news outlets in Japan, but when the top crime story of a national news agency is about some drunk grabbing a young woman's breasts, (I'm certainly NOT degrading the physical and emotional toll on the young lady), my sense is things could get way worse here before they even come on par with my own home country.

As for those that seem to lay the responsibility of the attack at the feet of the woman, merely because she was walking home on a public street at night, unaccompanied, c'mon man!

If we are comparing Japan to other countries regarding safety from A to Z maybe a good country for comparison would be Taiwan because Taiwan is the country most similar to Japan. If Taiwan does better regarding safety in one category, maybe Japan can learn from Taiwan and vice versa.

Japan has a serious issue with Mental Support. It lacks serious attention to this issue, and so called "quacks" who come here from overseas to charge big money with fake promises are in abundance.

Kishida san would do greatly, by helping focusing inward rather than outward, for the future of Japan.... AND that's a statement coming from a Gaijin !!! no less.

I think it’s even more unsafe in the countryside with not so many people around and no lighting.

at least he did not blame it on the alcohol or say he did not remember it happening...

“I touched her breasts on an impulse.”

Someone should kick him in the nuts "on an impulse". Let's see if he thinks that's a good excuse then.

Nowhere on Earth is safe from the impulses of sexual desires. If someone wants to touch you, they're going to do it anytime and in any place. It's really sad she was assaulted like this. My girl is also Japanese and said she had her breasts (which are pretty big) fondled from behind in a train station while she was buying her ticket. This happens a lot in Japan, especially to Japanese women. I'm glad this woman had the courage to report it as soon as she did and hopefully others who can't control their impulses take note and just...go to Kabukicho or Uguisudani and rent a...

Actually seeing many women in their 20s-30s walking alone on their way home after 10, 11pm, in relatively dark streets, with their make-up, mini skirts etc. was one of my first culture shocks after arriving here, and I saw the same "phenomenon" not only in smaller capitals but also pretty much anywhere in the big cities and their bed towns, pretty common meeting friends in Shibuya and catching the last train for their little towns in Chiba or Saitama. This simply cant be emulated in any Europe/US city with more than 300.000 people.

Animal testing should be done on sex offenders, not on animals, since they clearly don't care about consensus

I have walked home hundreds of times after midnight. Nothing happened. You wouldn't be making excuses for sex offenders would you ?

Root cause analysis should be studied.

It is easy to make the relationship of lack of exchange between men and women, and the unstoppable desire of some men to touch a woman, for sexual reasons.

If you are young and healthy, if a man, could you live without ever discussing with a woman, because that what japan society does in general.

I am just explaing that psychology plays a role, I am not condoning in any way that kind of behaviour.

And about the fact that a very little percentage of women who voluntary go to koban after such assault, it is I believe because they are just acustomed and accept to be seen as a target and for some touching breasts is very low in intensity on the scale of all the pervert stuff done by Japanese in general (by experience learnt on the Internet).

Make life easier between men and women (time, sharing moments), and things shall go smoother.

Putting in prison the pervs won't help much, although a list should be created to follow them.
