Police in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, said Tuesday they have arrested a 26-year-old man over the assault and robbery of a 16-year-old girl as she walked home last month.

According to police, Atsushi Tsunoda approached the girl as she was walking home after finishing her part-time job at around 10:45 p.m. on Aug 9, Fuji TV reported. He hit the girl from behind with a hammer-like tool and then stole her watch and her tote bag containing her wallet with 10,000 yen in it.

Police said the girl suffered a fractured skull which will require about three months to recover from.

Tsunoda, who has admitted to the charge, was identified through street surveillance camera footage, police said.

I wonder what they will do for Tsunoda after his arrest ...!!! Probably by the end of month will see him again around Utsunomiya station ...!!!

In a month, no. In a year or two, yes.

If you hit some one one that back of the head with a heavy object like a hammer, you know that this act might kill someone, so the punishment will have to reflect the surverity of the act, I don't know what he will be charged with, but i hope he does some time in the clink for it.

Well done, now crack him about the head a few times whilst in custody please!

Hitting someone on the head with a hammer so hard they fractured her skull? I agree with Viking - this is attempted murder.

One would think the only crime that would occur is some teenager stealing a candy bar from a convenience store.

Yes, one would think that, wouldn't they, if they lived in a bubble and disregarded something called "evidence to the contrary".

And why are you repeatedly copying and pasting your own comments from other articles?

Needed money for pachinko, booze and cigarettes, I suppose

I would love to see them bring back the public stocks for these kinds of gutless criminals. Lash them up at the Hachiko exit of Shibuya station and let the 'justice' begin!

I feel really sad for the girl and hope she recovers fully.

Unfortunately not for this heinous crime. Tsunoda will eventually be released, the16-year-old girl will suffer physiologically for considerably longer.

What a low life. He needed to try and bash her skull in to rob her? The poor girl, I wish her a speedy recovery and him a long stay in prison.

Music on street so that no one will hear screaming of attempted murder vuctjms?

How about they start playing classical music everywhere in the public (if this is not already happening) including outside on the streets as a preventative measure for extinguishing violent crime.

I disagree. I think some easy listening from between 1978-1986 played on every street corner would see the crime rate plummet. Rising poverty and unchecked mental health issues? Fugedaboutit!

It is shocking that such violent crime ever occurs in East Asia (China, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, etc.). One would think the only crime that would occur is some teenager stealing a candy bar from a convenience store. East Asia is one of the safest areas in the world. Accordingly one should be able to walk around worry free at midnight. Additionally, I understand Japan has Koubans scattered around to ensure optimal safety, strict weapons laws and a culture where if one commits a crime, shame is brought to the entire family. That being said this act was beyond depraved and the individual should be given the maximum punishment allowed. Hopefully the victim will make a complete recovery.
