Man arrested for assaulting 3 high school girls on bikes

Police in Tokyo said Thursday they have arrested a 31-year-old unemployed man for randomly assaulting three high school girls as they were riding to school on their bicycles last month.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Keitaro Kuwabata, first attacked two girls as they rode to school in Higashiyamato city at around 8 a.m. on Feb 19, TV Asahi reported. Police said Kuwabata struck them on the arms, knocking them off their bikes. In the second incident on Feb 20, which occurred about 50 meters from the first attack, police said Kuwabata slashed another school girl with a knife.

Kuwabata, who was arrested after a witness identified him, was quoted by police as saying he attacked the girls because they rode their bikes too close to him and it unnerved him.

He went from hitting to slashing with a knife in only a day?! I'm glad he was caught before he escalated even more and wound up seriously injuring or worse killing someone.

A very pusillanimous act. Hope this scum is kept behind the wall.

Seems like this guy needs a padded room, nothing to unnerve him there

So he just so happened to be carrying a knife with him huh? This fool was going to attack anybody no matter what they did.

I get unnerved by all the pavement cyclists but never take to hitting or knifing them....

So, how many random assaults on kids have we seen in the last month or so? 4 or 5? Watch yourself and you kids people! The nuts are out early this year.

Random criminal acts make pointless and boring news items. A story is when a pattern is identified.

just a nutcase, if cyclist rides into you - dont move and sue the parents

"So, how many random assaults on kids have we seen in the last month or so? 4 or 5? Watch yourself and you kids people! The nuts are out early this year.'

I saw this one, as I was parking my bike, he looked at me strangely...so nignored him...then later as I was riding my bike I saw this mid-age female getting paranoid as I passed it, so I nignored her and moved over more to the left and gave her an almost complete sidewalk lane and it was still not satisfied she wrapped her arms around her purse and started running .....perhaps she had a newsflash: foreigners arrested for crimes in Japan so you're right: "Watch yourself" ..thanks

Of course what he did was wrong and going from knocking them off their bikes to using a knife is going from zero to wacko at shinkansen speed... but ... I can in some sense understand his frustration with how some people ride thier bikes, especially through a crowded street. I've almost been smashed by reckless riders numerous times. But I wouldn't knife 'em.

All these wackos are unemloyed, what's the deal? I think they WANT to go to prison, no need to worry about employment, you get your 3 meals a day and Bob's your uncle.

Alex Einz, you say 'if cyclist rides into you - dont move and sue the parents'.

Well, I was hit by a woman on a bike on a sidewalk in Kyoto, not long ago, and she actually fell off her bike and hurt herself more than she hurt me. But I helped her up off the ground, picked up the stuff that flew from her basket and made sure she was okay. Never thought of suing her parents. Or her. I was just glad she didn't land on her head, since, like most cyclists in Japan, she wasn't wearing a helmet.

Yes, you have to have eyes in the back of your head, on most city sidewalks, but that's a small price to pay, just like a sore back and knees for a few days. Stuff happens, although there's a different 's'-word for that. Like The Eagles song says, 'Get over it.'

How come he did get upset at the 150 lb man that rode too close to him? I think he just likes to push and hurt HS girls. Needs some time in the rubber room with therapy.

Trevor you really should not encourage that behaviour, as a cyclist I am telling you that cyclists do not belong on sidewalks in any situation and the current behaviour is beyond anything acceptable. I personally walking in a sidewalk will never move or make way to a cyclist, but tell them to move to the road and keep walking my way. It aint about get over it, its about enforcing social norms which some people are lacking ,specially with todays lax education. offcourse a knife is an idiot solution and he should be locked but that doesnt mean i need to look around on pavement for every cyclist that might come my way.

That's why I ride along the streets. Sidewalks are full of crazy, unpredictable peds.

Once again, another senseless assault by a paranoid individual in Japan. Is the paranoia caused by too many drugs or the lack of the right ones?

seen one looking for such troubles in Bunkyo-ku, near a supermarket at night, he looked like he was proud and hating life...but did not want to end it all except to share his demise by lashing out.....another one was hanging out late at night in the twilight zone...concocting something of a legend in his own mind.
