A 74-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after he hit a 51-year-old woman in the face with a beer glass at the bar she manages in Yokohama on Saturday.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 2:40 a.m. at the bar in Kotobukicho, Naka Ward, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police said the suspect, Masao Kawashima, got into an argument with the woman and he hit her in the face with his beer glass. The woman suffered minor injuries. Another customer called police.
Although most bars have been asked to close by 8 p.m. each night under the state of emergency due to the coronavirus, this one was still open and had many customers. The area has a lot of rest houses for people of no fixed address, many of whom are over 65.

LOL, loser. I suppose drinking and being an arse is all he has left
lock him up for the rest of his pathetic life

This puts to rest the ridiculous notion that Japanese people are peaceful and polite.
Fighto!
74 year old dropkick and loser in life. Probably thinks he is tough by attempting to glass a woman. Shame there were no young guys there willing to step in and mess him up. Lock up the scum until he expires.

While in no way countenancing his actions, but if the bar had closed when it was supposed to this would not have happened. Better yet to effectively control Wuhan virus, close all bars for the duration.
Do the hustle
The bar should have been closed.

Not really. That area is a buraku or day worker area, same as the one in Osaka. Not a lovely place. Violence is not rare, long history of misery.

Some of the comments I read are frankly pretty scary and almost fascist.
The old guy commited an extremely despicable action, which will be punished of course.
He might get a penalty or a suspended sentence if he’s first offender,or probably serve some time in a reformation centre.
But to claim to lock this old man forever is just too much.
That is why we need justice and democracy and people to give the right penalties with firm but just way.
Otherwise we will be back in the far west.

Fighto!
Maximum punishment for a stupid bar fight? So there is no worse crime that you can imagine? I don´t want to live in a world where your justice system is applied.

Says "oldman".

these people dont know the area, the history, the drama. It goes on there all the time. Its a dark crushing place. He wont get locked up forever, thats not how Japan works. Now if he was a salaryman, he would likely be shamed and career destroyed, but a salaryman wouldnt be in that place to begin with.

These old guys I see in the supermarket coughing near people and getting right up close are slightly annoying but taking a glass and sticking it in another person’s face?
Well...what is Japan coming to?
William77
So where did I state that I’m blaming the victim?
I think you should read more carefully my words.
I’m not defending the offender in any ways,Im merely stating that we’re not, including you a prosecutor or a lawyer.
And I’m just criticizing the people that are telling to lock a person forever without a fair judgement.
So unless you’re the prosecutor of the case or directly witness of the whole situation I remain in my positions.

why is the bar even open?

Chip Star: "This puts to rest the ridiculous notion that Japanese people are peaceful and polite."
Also that they are law abiding and that "the reason Corona is so low in Japan is because people abide by the stay-at-home suggestion when not at work".
"Although most bars have been asked to close by 8 p.m. each night under the state of emergency due to the coronavirus, this one was still open and had many customers."
MANY still stay open, and get overflow from places that do not. And this glass smashed across the woman's face? This is what happens when there is no punishment, and only "suggestions" about closing. Places won't close until they have to, and this will happen, or worse.
sir_bentley28
Surprised he didn't use the ol excuse "I was drunk and I can't remember!"

Because one anecdote outweighs a million statistics.
Fighto!
Since when is attempting to glass a defenseless woman in the face - simply doing her job - a "stupid bar fight?" Thats not a fight at all, its the worst type of assault with a weapon.
Nope. Lock the good-for-nothing old scum away for a very long time.
rgcivilian1
its 2:40 am, its a bar, serves plenty of alcohol, and there's a woman what else can one expect from this scenario at any given time.
