Man arrested for assaulting passerby who warned him about smoking outside station

I give credit to the older man here for scolding the idiot, and feel sorry for him as well as what he did was not deserving of a punch to the face!

This clearly explains why most Japanese just ignore these people and mind there own business. There are too many nutters around ready to snap at the slightest negative interaction. I also put the blame of these kinds of incidents into the police with their passive approach to policing. Smoking in front of stations is illegal and carries an insignificant fine of ¥2,000, which is very lightly enforced by local councils. I still regularly see ciggy butts on train platforms as well. I’ve seen them on platforms in the Tokyo subway system. Make the fine ¥20,000-¥30,000 and give police the power to dish out the fine. It should go a long way to stopping these kinds of incidents.

The 40 yr. should know better but not remorseful at all. Just a rude guy. Put him in prison for 1 yr to cool off.

We don't know how the confrontation actually went. The victim may have said "Excuse me, you're not supposed to smoke here. ......Look, I don't want to badger you, but.." BLAM Or perhaps he was behaving more aggressively and really getting into the smoker's face.

Either way, the buck lies with the authorities for giving smokers a message that they can smoke with impunity. But f smokers who do so.

Interesting how some posters here want to rule sentences and send people to jail,fortunately there are the right people like judges that will make a decision.

The guy that punched that guy is totally wrong and I hope that he will realize the bad thing he did.

But like someone suggested send a year in prison for a broken nose is exaggerated.

The assaulter should first apologize,pay to the victim the medications and propably he will be fined by the government.

Or get a suspended sentence,but go to jail for this I don’t think so.

Feel sorry for the older boy, but natives to loooove to point out if someone is doing something wrong. Like some confusing one way streets around here a local gg got off his bike and stood in the middle of the road blocking the path of a confused looking young lady driving the slowly wrong way and screamed at her, sure she was in the wrong but he being older thought it gave hime the right to more than just point out her mistake.

Aaaaannnd another 40 something crime. What happened to this generation??

There is only way to stop this; education, hard experience, and stricter fully enforced laws or the best way. Put all the smokers in a fully enclosed house for 1 week, filled with tobacco smoke, so thick where you can't really see, and let them puff away 24/7 for 1 whole week. No fresh air, just breath it all in. I bet they all quit after that 1 week.

Get the assailant into a smoking cessation program asap. His addiction is the problem, plus a rotten social attitude.

Sometimes it is difficult for those addicted to behave rationally-I am sure Mr Fukuhara regrets his violent act though...

I don't smoke and in fact I hate cigarettes. I hate spiders too but I don't go out of my way to kill everyone I see now do I? Also, growing up most of family members were smokers and I know that addictions are real. In this case I can see the first warning but the second is just being a pest. The guy heard the warning the first time so just move on with your life. That first warning will echo in his head for a while and perhaps lead to more care in the future. People don't change instantly so a second warning will just be viewed as harassment. I say, you don't want a broken nose, don't instigate one over a single cigarette.
