Man arrested for assaulting, robbing Uber Eats deliverer

Police in Higashi-Murayama, Tokyo, have arrested a 36-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of assaulting and robbing an Uber Eats deliverer last month.

Police said Tomoyuki Minagawa intercepted an Uber Eats deliverer, a man in his 40s, on a street at around 10:30 p.m. on Jan 26, Fuji TV reported. Police said Minagawa demanded the man hand over his money or he would kill him. He took 3,000 yen from the man, beat him several times about the head and face and then fled.

About 10 minutes later, Minagawa stole a briefcase from a company employee as he was walking home, police said.

Minagawa, who was identified through street surveillance camera footage, was arrested on Friday. Police said he has admitted to the charge, and quoted him as saying that he had lost his job and desperately needed money.

he had lost his job and desperately needed money.

He's never heard of unemployment benefits? I hope he spent that 3,000 yen well, like on food. This is the kind of news story you read while in third world countries.

More and more people will lose jobs because many businesses have to close because of the pandemic panic.

Crimes will rise!

This is just the beginning. People get depressed, frustrated, dont know how to pay life expenses, rent and food, DV will rise...and so on.

Jeff Lee,Japan is only developed in some sectors eg vehicle manufacturing.

Most people live from hand to mouth, doing baito and hakken.Nothing to save. Most have to do zangyo to survive. In that sense majority of the Japanese populace already live like third world or even worse when you factor in cost of living.

The Uber guy complied and handed over the money, why the need to physically assault him? Maximum sentence, please.

Ken, you are not wrong. I've talked to lots of people who are struggling because of the lack of overtime, which is how they really get ahead. Isn't it a crime that people have to work so many extra hours just to come out ahead, while companies are pocketing profits and not returning it to the workers.

JeffLee, I agree with you many times, but this poor guy may have been a part-timer, or contract worker who didn't qualify for unemployment benefits, or they may have run out, who knows. But as you are always railing against big corporations for being terrible corporate citizens and not helping out the people of Japan, I thought you of all people would be more sympathetic.

We will see more of this. And one of the problems with crime is that the victims are disproportionally people who are also struggling to make ends meet. The politicians and the rich, as usual, are protected from the problems they helped to create.

"The politicians and the rich, as usual, are protected from the problems they helped to create."

Japan just has to build more prisons to accommodate their growing anti social mis"creations"

Exactly. He gave you all his money and you still had to assault him. This isn't just a thief. This is a thug who could even progress to killing.

Japan has unemployment compensation sort of, but it takes 3 months for it to kick in, in the meantime SOL. Desperate measures call for desperate actions. Instead of the Olympics why doesn't this government do more to speed up the process, what a waste of funding.

" Instead of the Olympics why doesn't this government do more to speed up the process, what a waste of funding." Because it is not a business priority. Risking a cv19 surge with the influx of non native Olympians, is a more welcomed risk.

Definitely not the way to deal with poverty and a terrible thing to do towards a fellow human.

But incidents like these are very likely fuelled by increasingly desperate people facing no way out of Covid and economic malaise induced poverty.

May God have mercy on and somehow help them.

I hope the victims recover. I thought this is Japan and that Japan just like other countries such as Singapore and Taiwan are top notch when it comes to safety and one does not need to worry about being mugged???!!!

He's never heard of unemployment benefits?

Doubt it. He stole 3000 yen and a briefcase which probably had no money in it. Clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed.

not a thug... he was just very miserable and wanted to take his anger out on anyone where he could to relieve his anguish mind in retaliation from losing his job and is starving.

Some people have nothing to lose and they don’t care if their actions lead to arrest. Stay safe y’all

That clearly explains crime doesn't pay. He literally did a foolish thing.
