Police in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of assault and robbery after he beat up a taxi driver and refused to pay the fare last December.

According to police, Miyabi Shibuya, a company employee from Kawasaki City, has denied the charge and claims not to remember the incident at all.

Police said the incident occurred at around 12:10 a.m. on Dec 29, 2019 in Kawasaki’s Saiwai Ward, Sankei Shimbun reported. At the time, Shibuya was intoxicated and sleeping in the taxi when it arrived at his apartment. When the 72-year-old male driver woke him up, Shibuya got out without paying the 2,180 yen fare.

The driver followed Shibuya and asked him to pay the fare, at which point, Shibuya allegedly beat him about the head with his bag. The victim sustained head injuries that required a full week of recovery.

Taxi drivers can sometimes be the biggest scammers, so I always take taxi driver statements with a grain of salt.

a 2300 yen fare? get real, the drunk is a punk.

Send the vicious SOB to prison. Intoxication is no excuse for either bilking or GBH.

Don’t think I’ve ever heard the defense “Not guilty by reason of I don’t remember”.

Drunk and attacking anybody is a crime , no matter what excuses they want to give.

Perhaps one day the courts/judges will start handing down heavy jail sentences for these "I don't remember anything" excuses, especially when there's evidence against them. This is the only country I am aware of that will accept that as a valid defense.

A week to heal? That is one serious injury inflicting bag! Probably adorned with brass knuckles or something.

I have been taking taxis for 30 years without incident. I guess some people invite trouble.

A dreadful human being. There are alot of angry little Japanese men about. I'm also a little man, but I prefer to vent my frustration through words rather than physical abuse. A bully is the best way to describe Mr Shibuya. Or a c u next Tuesday; a phrase I learnt in the UK!

He left out the part where he says he was drunk

He did say that he didn't remember the incident. That's close!
