Police in Tokyo on Thursday arrested a 40-year-old man on suspicion of assault and stealing a taxi after he refused to pay the fare.

The incident occurred at around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday, Kyodo News reported. Police said Manabu Sato, whose address and occupation are unknown, asked the driver of the taxi he was in to stop along a street in Adachi Ward. When the driver, who is in his 70s, asked for the 2,900 yen fare, Sato refused to pay and got out of the taxi. The driver got out to try and stop him but Sato shoved him to the ground, then got in the taxi and drove away.

The driver called police who found the taxi 40 minutes later about three kilometers away. Sato was asleep on the sidewalk near the taxi. Police said he was intoxicated at the time and quoted him as saying he can't remember what he did.

The driver sustained a minor injury to his hand, police said.

The charges should include assault, theft, theft of a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated. Sadly, the way Japanese law works, he will only be charged with one offense and not necessarily the most severe offense..

I was 90% expecting this to be in Saitama but was wrong.

Police in Tokyo on Thursday arrested a 40-year-old man on suspicion of assault and stealing a taxi after he refused to pay the fare......................Uum, little confusing headline, why and how, and who could he pay the fare to if he stole the taxi? ..............Apart from that, this coward, 40yrs old assaulted a 70yr old man, which could have ended up being very serious. Lets hope he gets his just rewards inside a cosy cell.

Blackout over drunk this is why alchol is a poison and drug. Courts and doctors know how bad alcohol is for you but the won’t illegalize the toxic substances

Sure! He can't remember. (sarcasm). How lame is that! I can believe that from a 70+ year old, but from a 40 year old? I'm just over 50, and I'm sure I can remember what I did last night; even if I was drunk. C'mon guy! You did it. Now, admit it.

Great way to ruin your life at 40yo. Assault and stealing a car is not going to help him keeping or getting a job from now on.

What's new? I don't remember anything. Lol.

By the way, a lot of people in Japan are surprised when they are told that in other countries you can be arrested for public displays of your drunkenness. Gee.

Oh, I get it. I guess they think a salaryman should be given the right to make life miserable for others because of their slave-like dedication to the workplace. Gotcha.

They can charge him with drunk driving too.

Japan has a lot of alcoholic the problem is they dont have detox dedicated to aclcholism like they do in the USA to sober you up and ever touch that poison

on must understand why alcoholism is ignored in Japan because of the crime rate and the medical conditions it imposes. So cops and hospitals making big money off untreated alcoholism

Double the sentence every time someone says this.

This is what I can imagine I'd do if Id ever drink a whole bottle of vodka: sleep on the floor, puke on someone's shoes, be way too sincere or in the worst case scenario, confess to the first stranger in sigh.

But start punching people, shoving someone to the ground, stealing a taxi. Utter BS.

Double the sentence every time someone says this.

So you would punish someone for speaking the truth of what happened when questioned by the police?

No authoritarianism here. Carry on.

They can charge him with drunk driving too.

But they won't.
