Man arrested for attempted kidnapping of 10-year-old girl in Tokyo

Tokyo metropolitan police said Tuesday they have arrested a 29-year-old man in Adachi Ward, after he bound a 10-year-old girl's hands and feet, and forced her into a large duffle bag in an attempted kidnapping last July.

Police said the suspect, identified as Kentaro Makino, stalked the young 4th year elementary school student as she was making her way home from school. Walking up behind her, he threatened her with a knife and forced her into a stairwell of an apartment building, and then proceeded to bind both her hands and legs with handcuffs, Fuji TV reported. Police said Makino then ordered the girl to get into a large duffle bag he had with him.

However, just before he began opening the bag for her to climb inside, the young girl screamed, scaring Makino. He quickly fled the scene still holding the bag, leaving the girl still tightly bound inside the stairwell.

Police said they began their investigation using street surveillance camera footage and by searching for anyone who had purchased handcuffs before the attempted kidnapping. Over 6,000 results turned up. However, police said they narrowed the list down to 560 individuals who purchased two sets of handcuffs at one time. Of those, police identified Makino based on the girl's description, and finally arrested him on Monday, Fuji reported.

Inside Makino's apartment, police discovered over 2,000 adult magazines depicting young girls in bondage.

This man needs a loooooong jail time as he seems like plain nutcase. It would've turned out very ugly had the plan gone his way.

Kuddo's to the police dept. for their diligent pursuit of this case. Even though it took so long it paid off in getting this pervert off the streets. Let's hope the courts put this one away long enough to get him some much needed counseling!

Nice detective work by the police.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

And yet people still try to claim this stuff has no link to crime.

Correlation does not equal causation.

I... understand even less why society tolerates it.

Whatever makes you think society tolerates it? You do realize he was arrested, correct? That's society's way of saying 'we don't tolerate that'.

Every morning when I walk to the station, it never ceases to amaze me how little kids are able to walk to school on their own or with a group of friends.

Yeah, people think that because they read of a few incidents like this one that the entire society has gone to the dogs, when nothing could be further than the truth. Sensationalist news increases readership which in turn increases advertising profits. A report that '1 million kids walked to school today without incident' wouldn't make for very interesting news to read, even if it is a counterbalance to a story about one messed up guy who stepped on 4 kids feet.

Child molesters are the lowest form of life and should be treated accordingly, ie chemically castrated and never allowed in society again. To inflict such horrors on young children is simply disgusting.

I'm gad they caught this creep and I'm especially glad this poor girl was left relatively unscathed.

But now I can't help but feel unease about the "560 individuals who purchased two sets of handcuffs at one time" that the police investigation turned up. What the hell...?!

4 ( +6 / -2 )

However, police said they narrowed the list down to 560 individuals who purchased two sets of handcuffs at one time

Is anybody else worried about the other 559 people who bought 2 sets of handcuffs?

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Disgusting peterass needs to be put in a jail cell for a long time.

Good work by the Japanese police on this!

Check how many forgot to also purchase duct tape.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The risks children face have seemed to spiral out of control.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

I guess now this guy knows what hand cuffs feel like now. He purchased his own fate! Now he has time to think about his wildest dream one that was too good to become true!

Okay, time for another lesson in self-preservation for my kids.

"Inside Makino’s apartment, police discovered over 2,000 adult magazines depicting young girls in bondage."

Forgive my innocence, but where do people get their hands on magazines like that? Who makes these and why are they available?

3 ( +5 / -2 )

I'm actually amazed at the fact that they were able to compile a list of all the people who bought handcuffs at the time. Is there some form of a registration that you have to fill out when you purchase a pair? I've seen sets of them for sale at shops like Don Quixote. Do they have video recordings of the register that are tagged when someone buys a set? I've never bought a pair before and don't have any plan to in the future, but if anyone could enlighten me as to how they made the list of people I would greatly appreciate it.

Also the sheer amount of people who have purchased handcuffs in that period is frightening. Glad they managed to catch this scumbag, and hopefully the remaining 5999+ people are just into some kinky adult stuff.

samwatters - What society tolerates kidnapping kids?

Every morning when I walk to the station, it never ceases to amaze me how little kids are able to walk to school on their own or with a group of friends. It's actually one of the things I admire the most about Japan, so I hope this case doesn't freak parents out.

Inside Makino’s apartment, police discovered over 2,000 adult magazines depicting young girls in bondage.

One shudders to think what the outcome would have been if this loon's kidnapping attempt was successful. Would anybody else support tougher laws and restrictions on child pornography in Japan?

This is at least the third this year. How incredibly scary..

2 ( +2 / -0 )

what... the... HELL. He should not be allowed to see the light of day for a very long time.

Inside Makino’s apartment, police discovered over 2,000 adult magazines depicting young girls in bondage.

Chances are, these are girls that are 'barely legal' but still legal, they just look young, and that's what sickos like these want. So if they can't find someone that looks Lolita young, kidnap a girl that's actually THAT young.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

This. Read on. "Inside Makino’s apartment, police discovered over 2,000 adult magazines depicting young girls in bondage." " I asked one of my students, a police detective, about the easy availability (of child pornography), and he just made a face. shrugged his shoulders, and shook his head. Odds are everything in that guy's apartment is perfectly legal, which is pretty terrible."

That's not society tolerating the kidnapping of children, that's society tolerating pornography. They aren't the same thing. There are obviously a lot of people buying this sick porn, but few incidents of children getting kidnapped, so it cannot be concluded that correlation equals causation. After all these types of kidnappings happen in countries where this type of porn is illegal as well.

This guy (Makino) needs some serious help."

I agree. Even more than that he needs punishment.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Forgive my complete ignorance, but who buys handcuffs

Really? You've never seen or bought "adult" toys?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I find three incidents in child abduction in the first 50 days of the year to be more than a few

In a country of 130 million? That's not many at all.

I remember a time when you simply didn't hurt children because it was wrong and the urges and desires of society's sick underbelly didn't illicity sympathy.

On the contrary, compassionate societies have always advocated for rehabilitation over punishment. It's the basis on which most (all?) western legal systems operate. When I was growing up we were taught this. It's only recently that people's frustrations have led to them wanting punitive-based legal systems.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I've always thought that all the hentai porn easily available in Japan encourages weirdos like this to act out their sick fantasies.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

They are probably now searching for additional victims.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

by searching for anyone who had purchased handcuffs before the attempted kidnapping. Over 6,000 results turned up. However, police said they narrowed the list down to 560

So, over 6,000 handcuffs exist in area. What kind of persons are 560 handcuffs owners?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

One can only imagine the embarrassing conversations between the investigators and the purchasers of the handcuffs.

"Why did you purchase handcuffs?" "Well.... Er.... You see....." (Guy's wife from the kitchen) "what are you talking about out there?" (Guy sweating w a pleading look in his eye at the investigators - one of whom is a woman) "NOTHING dear!"

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@techall as long as it is used between consenting adults then there is no issue, if they are bought by single guys with a heavy interest in torture and bondage (lollicon) stuff then they need to be watched.

I am also worried about the increase of these kidnapping (attemps) this year.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

6000 purchases of handcuffs. One crazy dude tries to kidnap a girl using them. So now we have people shaming those who buy handcuffs, despite the other 5999 purchases not being connected to any crime.

Some look at his 2000 magazines and see the impetus of his crime, as if such things never existed before those magazines. I look at his 2000 magazines and see a wall that kept him in line all this time and is keeping a lot of others in line and will until they die. This crazy dude is the exception. If you can't see that, you cannot understand a lynchpin in Japan's safety record. For some, the lolicon material is an outlet. Remove the outlet and Japan will start to be just like other places that have banned it.

Personal disgust and sensational crimes are not a solid basis for nationwide radical change.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

This guy needs some serious help. Thank goodness nothing more happened to the girl and they caught him.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Forgive my innocence, but where do people get their hands on magazines like that? Who makes these and why are they available?

Obviously you've never ventured into one of the "DVD Shops" in Japan. They're usually right in front, right when you walk in, and not just a few either: hundreds of them. It's very, very disturbing. I asked one of my students, a police detective, about the easy availability, and he just made a face. shrugged his shoulders, and shook his head. Odds are everything in that guy's apartment is perfectly legal, which is pretty terrible.

wow, lucky young girl...I hope they hang this man until dead or better yet cut his achilles heels and his fingers

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

I will never understand why people like Makino do these things and understand even less why society tolerates it. Makino and people like him who prey on children should be executed.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

@strangerland. We'll have to agree to disagree, then. I find three incidents in child abduction in the first 50 days of the year to be more than a few and I think people who are advocating help and treatment for Makino and people like him are good intentioned but misguided. I remember a time when you simply didn't hurt children because it was wrong and the urges and desires of society's sick underbelly didn't illicity sympathy. Yes, I think Makino should be put to death not only for his crime against the young girl but also for the effect that it will have on society but again that's just my opinion.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

what are the odds of this guy never having a girlfriend before?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

@Disillusioned

One shudders to think what the outcome would have been if this loon's kidnapping attempt was successful. Would anybody else support tougher laws and restrictions on child pornography in Japan?

I don't see child photography, all porns are made with girls that are adult age, and as someone told, there is existence of " Lolita " fashion and fetish, that means, adults females that act and look as younger girls, and also Tokyo put the law where sex crimes are prohibited of showing in Anime and Manga . And look at this , Japan Today show every crime that happen in Japan, with population of 127 million people, so, this was third case in two months for whole Japan. Its guite good, and yet, also ,all victims were found alive , simple, Japan has low crime mentality, and thats is major factor . Simple,@Disillusioned, you lack the understanding of Japan culture and mentality .

"Every morning when I walk to the station, it never ceases to amaze me how little kids are able to walk to school on their own or with a group of friends. It's actually one of the things I admire the most about Japan, so I hope this case doesn't freak parents out."

I totally agree with you on this and like you I hope it doesn't change but already there are schools across Japan that are requiring children to walk with adults because of the recent spat of children being abducted by men with perverse interests in children (since January Sapporo, Kobe, I think, and now Tokyo). I'm not the only one who thinks three cases in the first seven weeks of the year surpasses "a few incidents," either as a number of other posters have also commented on how they are afraid for children.

"Whatever makes you think society tolerates it?"

This. Read on. "Inside Makino’s apartment, police discovered over 2,000 adult magazines depicting young girls in bondage." I was puzzled by the handcuffs as well. Forgive my complete ignorance, but who buys handcuffs? I would put a trace on everyone single handcuff sold, because there couldn't be any good intentions behind the use of them. Whats the purpose? BD? ugh...stop the sickness

rickyveeFEB. 18, 2014 - 03:56PM JST what are the odds of this guy never having a girlfriend before?

What are the odds he's unemployed? We're beginning to hear more of these kidnappings of little girls/little girls going missing recently, could this be some kind of crime wave going on?

I'm glad she was safe though.

And yet people still try to claim this stuff has no link to crime.

all porns are made with girls that are adult age,

theoretically, yes. However, in that porn, a) the "women" are dressed and posed to look like young girls and b) that rule doesnt apply to hentai and anime porn. So you can easily draw and get away with, oh, lets say a 10 year old girl in bondage....

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

the young girl screamed, scaring Makino

What a hard case this bloke must be. Scared by a child screaming.

I'm very glad indeed this turned out well. Let's hope he gets banged up in the same cell with a vicious rapist and a tub of butter with sand in.

And who still buys adult magazines?

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

Lighten up jpn_guy. Have a sense of humour.

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

Combinis and dirty video shops readily stock these types of magazine. Why, Peacetrain? Do you want to buy one?
