Police in Sapporo, Hokkaido, have arrested a 40-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of attempted murder after he slashed a 48-year-old friend at a bar.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 5:55 a.m. Wednesday at the bar in Chuo Ward, Kyodo News reported. Police said Nobuhiro Hishinuma had been drinking for several hours with his friend at the bar when they got into an argument.

Police said Hishinuma pulled out a knife and slashed his friend’s face and arms. The bar manager called police.

Hishinuma was quoted by police as saying the knife was his but he was drunk and can’t remember what he did.

The victim, who was also intoxicated, was taken to hospital. Police said his wounds were not life-threatening.

The boys would have been better off putting their glasses down and eating some 5 AM ramen.

What bar is operating at 5:55 AM?

Oh man, loads of places are open at that time. I live in a fairly rural city and my morning run takes me through the drinking area. There are at least three places guaranteed to be open and about four more that usually are, every freaking day! Also, that doesn't include any of the host/hostess bars that will stay open until the customers leave.

Attempted murder really is a stupid sort of charge created by people in the legal system so self-important and pomous they literally think they can read minds.

The only ways to even come close to proving such intent is to either get a free confession or extract one. Yet even the free confession could be a lie proferred by someone who naturally feels guilt or shame more than their deserved amount.

What this is is an assault with a lethal/ deadly weapon...maybe...but its going to depend a lot on the size and type of knife.

Police said his wounds were not life-threatening.

That suggests a lot, including the idea that this was NOT attempted murder.

Have you never been drinking in Japan or something? Are you under some silly idea that there is a closing time here or something?

I'm guessing that friendship is over

"unemployed man", Does this add to his deviousness? Is he morally lower than someone employed? His lack of employment was a deciding factor in his actions?

Surely employed people don't knife others. It's unthinkable.

I'm fairly sure unemployed is often "code" or a polite way of saying he is a yak and not the animal kind.

Or that he genuinely ‘attempted’ murder, but was really bad at it.
