Police in Tokyo have arrested a 29-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of attempting to rob an internet cafe where he spent the night of Jan 1.

According to police, the incident occurred at an internet cafe in Chiyoda Ward, Fuji TV reported. Police said that after spending Saturday night in the cafe, Ren Hasegawa threatened an employee, a woman in her 40s, with a knife at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, and demanded money.

The woman activated a silent security alarm and police rushed to the scene and apprehended Hasegawa before he could leave. Nobody was injured during the incident.

Police quoted Hasegawa as saying he was desperate for money.

These kind of silent alarm should be in every 7-eleven store too. Way too many times do those places get rob too.

I'm surprised they had the silent alarm, given both how safe the country generally is.

Why not seek welfare support before resorting to crime? Or you know, try for a job?

They don't even use smoke detectors, that's how safe it is!

Typical Japan bashing nonsense, no doubt from a native of an adjacent country; get it removed please.

Due to COVID, its not easy to get a job that actually pays well.

He should have just applied for a part time job at the net cafe if he needed money so bad!

How does he get welfare without an address?

He won't even get medical care without a fixed address.

How much money does he think the average Internet cafe (in 2022) has in the till?

Supermarkets, Combinis, SDF (military), and station custodial staffs always looking for workers.

It shouldn't say he was desperate, it should say he was too lazy to find a job.

It's an interesting question and I don't know the answer, but my local internet cafe has 5 floors including internet booths, pool/darts, karaoke, serves food and drinks etc. When I was last there I'm guessing there were 100 or so customers so the till probably held a chunky amount, depending on how frequently they empty it.

Low employment or no employment, and the cost of living going up.The young people with no future doing nothing or piece meal jobs. I would predict more crimes to come and with that more suicides! Sorry to say but it is inevitable!
