Police in Osaka have arrested a 69-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly strangled his 96-year-old mother at her nursing home.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 2:15 p.m. on Sunday at the nursing home in Yodogawa Ward. Police said the suspect has admitted to hitting his mother’s head with a rod and then trying to strangle her to death with a towel, Sankei Shimbun reported. A male employee at the nursing facility managed to stop the assault when he heard a shriek of pain. The suspect then fled and headed to a nearby police box where he confessed to "attempting to kill" his mother.

The suspect was quoted as saying: “I have been caring for my mother, who suffers from dementia, for more than 10 years. However, she doesn't listen to what I say and it occurred to me that it's just a waste of my energy."

Police said the woman sustained light injuries to her head and neck.

It's a shame that he had to murder his own mother like that at her age. He should've just waited. She was 96, so she didn't have much time left in this world anyway.

RIP

Hope the lady in question recovers without too much trauma.

Dementia is a terribly sad illness and doesn't just affected the sufferer but the families involved, as well.

Very sad and very commonplace.

What a horrible son! One should respect one's 96-year-old mother. And even if one does not, that does not excuse murder! At the very worst he might have left her at the retirement home and let them care for her.
