Police said Tuesday they have arrested a 71-year-old man for attempting to murder his wife by pouring gasoline over her at their home in Nagano.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Tetsuo Kobayashi, poured lawnmower fuel over his wife while she was sleeping at around 5 a.m. Monday, NTV reported. His wife awoke and fled to a neighbor for help. Police said she suffered burns on her neck and shoulders.

Kobayashi was arrested near his house. He was quoted by police as saying that he was angry because he and his wife had quarreled. "But I didn't mean to kill her," he told police.

Burns from the gasoline? Or did he ignite the gasoline?

he clearly ignited it, the gasoline does not hurt unless set on fire.

Then wouldn't the headline read "Man arrested for attempting to murder wife by setting her on fire"?

I'm not sure what really happened either (because the article lacks detail), but I'll go with Kim S Mao's explanation.

Gasoline can cause chemical burns. It is a corrsive substance and thus is a strong solvent. Read the warnings on the gas pumps and read the wranings on lighter fluid and kerosene. It is a caustic substance and the fumes can do much damage to the lungs and the eyes. I never understand how people can be so cruel, there are other ways to deal with anger.

Maybe they had a fight the night before and she said "I don't want to talk about it anymore. I'm going to bed."

So you pour GASOLINE on your wife but YOU DID NOT WANT TO KILL HER?????? This guy is crazy or just too stupid! Lock him up and throw away the keys!!

I want to know more about the burns - seems to me he tried to light her on fire. Gasoline can certainly irritate the skin, but can it burn skin without being ignited?

You will not get burns from unlit gasoline, a bad reaction perhaps, yes. Alkalis and acids will inflict chemical burns, gasoline won't.

71, Nagano. Probably thought she was thirsty or cold.
