Police in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, have arrested a 73-year-old man for allegedly threatening a male employee at a pachinko parlor with a knife and attempting to steal a Coke.
According to police, the man, whose name hasn’t been released, attempted to steal a bottle of Coca-Cola from a beverage case containing redeemable prizes from the pachinko parlor in Ishinomaki at around 5:50 p.m. on Sunday, local media reported.
The man pointed a knife at a male employee who asked him what he was doing, then left the premises without taking anything. The employee was not injured.
Police managed to identify the man by reviewing security camera footage from the pachinko parlor.
Police said the man told them he doesn’t remember the incident.

Its kind of nice living in a country where the attempted theft of a bottle of coke is the lead crime story in the national news.

Make no mistake that the media here prints these kinds of “crimes” even though theres plenty of crime going on.
A top police official in Osaka just recently admitted they undereported 50,000 crimes because of government pressure.
Fighto!
The attempted theft of coke is not newsworthy.
Someone threatening another person with a knife IS.
BTW - this story does not lead the national news in any of the Majors I've checked today.

And the other major crime story is about the arson that left 36 people dead. You can't just cherry pick what crime in Japan looks like.

You got to be poor as hell to have to steal a drink but yet have money to go pachinko wonder where that money was stolen from.

The Minority Report Bureau of Pre-Crime must have begun operations, because how else is it known he was trying to steal of bottle of Coke when he says he doesn't remember?
I mean, maybe it LOOKED that way on video, but maybe he was just trying to get into the machine so he could buy one? And never mind about reason. I am pretty sure the guy is deranged. Which means he might have been trying to steal a Ferrari for all we know.
