Police in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, have arrested a 34-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of breaking into a vacant home and stealing cash last December.

According to police, Toshimasa Morohoshi has admitted to burglarizing the house between 3 p.m. on Dec 8 and 8:30 a.m. on Dec 9, Sankei Shimbun reported. He stole 4,000 yen in cash.

The small house belongs to an 82-year-old woman who lives next door. She uses the vacant residence for storage site and a workshop.

Police said Morohashi emerged as a suspect after he left a personal item at the scene, without elaborating further.

Around the same time, there were several reports of trespassing and burglaries at other homes in the neighborhood, including stolen cash. Police are questioning Morohoshi about those incidents.

Good to learn no one was physically hurt. Such cold days this winter.

Desperate times are leading Japan’s desperate people to desperate measures. 15% of Japanese people are in poverty.

However miniscule, the increase in burglary is indicative of a larger, emerging pattern. Breaking and entering along with the theft of cash has become commonplace in our neighborhood and locality. The theft of money is primary and no other items or articles are targeted. Such was non-existent prior to the pandemic.

Let's see, driver's license, health insurance card, business card....??

I know a temp staff company that is hurting for new staff. Pays way better than the paltry chump change this two bit thief got.

In your neighbourhood (as far as you know), maybe. But Japan has never been some kind of burglary-free paradise, if that's what you're suggesting.

What gets me is that, in 2021, oldsters are STILL leaving cash lying around in their homes (or not even the place where they live, in this case!). This, and still falling for the old chestnut "ore ore" scam, are things I doubt I'll ever be able to wrap my head around.
