Man held for confining sleeping woman on train in his apartment

Kanagawa prefectural police said Sunday they have arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of confining a woman in his apartment in Sagamihara, after he allegedly took her from a train while she was sleeping.

The suspect, Yoshifumi Kurita, a temp worker, is also being questioned about four other similar incidents since last September, Fuji TV reported.

According to police, the 28-year-old woman, who lives in Tokyo's Adachi Ward, boarded a train early in the morning of June 4 at JR Shinjuku Station and was on her way home when she fell asleep. She told police she had been drinking a lot beforehand. She said that when she woke up, it was the morning of June 5 and she was lying on a futon in a strange apartment with Kurita.

The woman said she managed to escape when Kurita let down his guard, and ran to a nearby convenience store from where she called police.

Kurita, who was arrested on Saturday, has so far remained silent on how he managed to get the woman off the train and to his home.

Police said street surveillance camera footage near Kurita's apartment showed him walking and holding up a woman who looked dizzy, on the morning of June 4.

In the other four reported cases, the women said they, too, had been drinking and fallen asleep on trains, and when they awoke, they were in a stranger's home. Police believe Kurita may have been riding trains, specifically looking for women who had passed out due to drinking too much.

Yoshifumi! When they said you should pick up girls, that's probably not exactly what they meant...

Creepy predator.

Same as me, if I am drunk in public I become venerable.

I want to live where you live! If I am drunk in public I pretty much lose everyone's respect.

@kurisupisu

Falling aeep Iin trains,on the street or falling over are signs of problem drinking. These ladies are sacrificing their own safety by imbibing too much ....

Although I'm really inclined to agree with this I'm beginning to wonder if they do if for the same reasons the "unemployed" start robbing convenience stores ? These ladies are probably trying to "escape from reality" which, it would seem, is pretty harsh for most of us right now...

I doubt these young ladies are getting plastered with alcohol every single weekend and hopping on the last train.

If you're in the mizuwari business and as the article states "boarded a train early in the morning" which would be around the first trains running. I could safely bet that there are over 100,000+ women in Tokyo on any given morning making there way home (plastered).

She must be a heavy sleeper!

wow! That's pretty drunk. Yeah, alcoholism is maybe not addressed enough in Japanese society. I was almost going to say that someone must have drugged these women but I guess it's possible to be that tired and plastered? Of course, I'm not blaming the victims. It's not their fault this happened. Still, if they are in this condition regularly, they need attention for alcohol addiction. Then again, with the Japanese economy working the way it does for women, many of them may feel that they've no choice but to be in the business where this is a hazard.

@Michelle....

Blaming 101 ALL OVER these comments!! Women should be able to do whatever they want without fear of being kidnapped!

In a perfect world. Some men are extreme perverts and cont care. Same as me, if I am drunk in public I become venerable. Either with friends who are not so drunk as I can be robbed. Sorry...society.

<> the other four reported cases, the women said they, too, had been drinking and fallen asleep on trains, and when they awoke, they were in a stranger’s home. "<> I suspect that these victims may have been additionally drugged, after they had been spotted drunk already. Thus the perpetrator/s must be taking advantage of the victims admission that they had a drink previously assuming the whole blame solely on the drink they had. One way to get to the bottom of the issue is to subject the victim to blood tests for possible drug traces.

This happens ALOT more often than many would think. I've had many female friends who've had guys try to put the moves on them when they were drunk, and they ALWAYS happened on trains.

The NPA should launch a sting operation. Doll up their female officers and put them on trains pretending to be drunk. They catch / arrest the pervs "red-handed" as soon as they enter the love hotel.

Damned surveillance cameras, I mean, thank God for the surveillance cameras!

Is there really any doubt?

Perhaps they should look for other work or take cab home then.

Shinjuku ~ Sagamihara by Taxi ? expensive for a worker, on the Romance car ¥1,130. If you are a graduate and missed the recruit season, not easy to find work ! You're lucky you didn't end up in the cells when she woke up

Where is this parallel universe you are living in? I'm not blaming the woman directly, but I will comment that, it is very irresponsible to get so drunk that a stranger can take you off the train and back to his house without you having any recollection of events. It doesn't seem possible she was drugged, in this case. If you never put yourself into a situation where you can become a victim, you never will be one. This guy is obviously a creepy predator and the exact reason women should never let their guard down, sadly.

How to et her from train to his place while she remained asleep? and why "confined" if she just managed to walk out? weird story.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sorry...society.

And you're okay with that?

Here is a Japanese source with a video of the accused http://news.tv-asahi.co.jp/news_society/articles/000077325.html He looks confused, a bit like Andy Kaufman's foreign man.

Protip: If you starting to feel drunk, you've probably drank enough already. Stop drinking so you don't get so drunk that you fall asleep and have no clue whats going on. Absolutely no sympathy for people who make choices which get them into trouble.

1) What do you mean I have cancer after smoking for 30 years and cant afford treatment. Government handouts anywhere?

2) I left my door unlocked and a burglar came in and stole my valuables. IM A VICTIM!

3) I drank 4 bottles of jack and woke up in some weird apartment. DONT BLAME ME!

Wake up to reality folks. If you leave yourself vulnerable, it is the same as inviting trouble.

"why "confined" if she just managed to walk out?"

Let me try to explain...

Kurita... has so far remained silent on how he managed to get the woman off the train and to his home.

He drugged them!! Just look again at the timeline.

the 28-year-old woman... boarded a train EARLY IN THE MORNING OF JUNE 4... WHEN SHE WOKE UP IT WAS THE MORNING OF JUNE 5

That is a whole TWENTY-FOUR HOURS later...

Do you get it now???

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

If you leave yourself vulnerable, it is the same as inviting trouble.

No it's not, that's victim blaming. Inviting trouble is saying to someone 'come rape me' or 'come steal from me'. No one would say that, to so say that leaving yourself vulnerable is exactly the same as verbally inviting someone to rape them is ridiculous.

Of course leaving yourself vulnerable is not a good idea. But it's not the same as inviting trouble, and the only person in the wrong is the person who brings trouble.

Glad she managed to escape, hang-over and all. The suspect confined her, at least he had the common decency not to violate her. . . . like the suspect did to that poor woman who passed out in that hotel in Okinawa.

"Blaming 101 ALL OVER these comments!! Women should be able to do whatever they want without fear of being kidnapped!"

I cannot comment about these cases but the woman I saw was NOT AS DRUNK as she was PRETENDING to be. She was PLAYING THE VICTIM because she wanted somewhere to spend the night. It was obvious. Most men are decent people who recognize jail-bait when they see it.

I am only commented on what I saw and that was everyone, including me, avoiding the JAIL-BAIT when they saw it.

Police believe Kurita may have been riding trains, specifically looking for women who had passed out

Yes.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

What the...? How does one just walk into a stranger's place? Call me a cynic, but you've got to be high on some godforsaken hallucinogen to not even have an inkling as to where you end up. Anyways, this freak has clearly taken ''pick up'' to a whole new level, as another post has already pointed out.
