Man arrested for different crime suspect in Chiba Univ student's murder

A 48-year-old man arrested in a robbery case has made statements suggesting his involvement in the murder case of a 21-year-old college student in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, in October, investigative sources said Monday.

The man, arrested in mid-November in connection with a robbery case in the prefecture, closely resembles a man in security camera footage withdrawing cash from a bank account of Yukari Ogino, a Chiba University senior, a day before she was found murdered at her burned apartment in Matsudo, east of Tokyo, they said.

''The man who withdraw cash from the automated teller machine was me,'' the arrested man told police, according to the sources.

Chiba prefectural police will investigate the arrested man's possible links with the murder case, they said.

Ogino, who went out of contact on the night of Oct 20, was found dead with stab wounds to the neck and chest after the apartment where she lived alone was destroyed in an arson attack on the night of Oct 22.

Police believe the cause of her death was hemorrhagic shock as a result of her being stabbed in the chest several times with a knife, the sources said. The deepest stab wound reached near her heart with a length of about 11 centimeters.

In the security camera footage, made public by the police in early November, a man, wearing a blue shirt and a cap, was withdrawing about 20,000 yen from Ogino's bank account at an ATM near JR Matsudo Station in the vicinity of her apartment on Oct 21.

A bit of good news on a Monday morning, if this guy did the deed, he should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Then again, although I don't buy into conspiracies, it does seem rather convenient that the chap was already in custody for a similar offense. Who knows? A couple of hours down the cells and some grainy ATM footage, and we have a suspect. Hopefully the cops can tie this chap to the crime a little tighter before we all celebrate.

Now lets just hope the cops also make an arrest for the case down in Shimane.

Is this guy a foreigner?

well I will wait until they confirm with irrefutable evidence that this is the guy who tortured and carved up that poor girl before feeling happy. if it is him they should draw and quarter him.

His nationality doesn't matter, but it's highly likely he's Japanese. Thank goodness they are making progress on this. Fingers crossed they get some leads on the Shimane Bone Collector as well!

Is this guy a foreigner?

Believe me, if he were, we'd know all about it.

Look at his nose, I don't think he is japanese... The whole story is too sad anyway. RIP poor girl. :(

All criminals are caught one by one. Hopefully the one who killed the college student and dispersed her body part on the mountain top is caught soon too.

The question on my mind is: Did he make this statement of his own free will or did the police somehow coerce this confession? Sounds like they might have the guy...have to wait and see.

bobbafett, you're talking about the other one.

Japanese noses aren't always small and petite. Like someone else said if he was a foreigner then we would all know. They also don't all have flawless skin or even like sushi ;)

Finally the police seem to be moving faster than a snail. About time.

I think you are referring to "Miyako"?

Worst. Headline. Eva!

elsewhere on this site was a question or article asking or talking about what the chances were the guy who committed this murder would be caught. Someone made a comment saying the most likely way he would be caught would be if he were arrested in connection to another crime. Whoever that was........nice call.

This murder happened a couple doors down from a couple students of mine. They were really shaken up about it. R.I.P. Ogino san.

Fingers crossed that they caught the right guy. Or at least a guy who can tell them where he got her card from.

Thank you. That was me. I posted that opinion on the story in the Shukan Post section titled "Odds stacked against police in solving Shimane, Chiba student murders." Now, I hope the police have a lucky break and nab that maniac in Shimane.

He looks like quite a few Japanese I see on the streets - in fact, scarily like one of my students. Japanese, after all, are not a homogenous ethnicity as is often boasted.

I agree! Had to read it a few times... "crime suspect" creates some problems!

What's wrong with this guys skin ? it looks scary

dolphingirl: Agreed! This seems a little too pat for me. I sincerely hope this is the guy and he's made to pay for his crimes, but I'm going to wait for more facts before I start jumping for joy. Besides, he didn't admit to the murder, just to using the debit card. Those are two very different things, and culpability in the latter does not necessitate culpability in the former.

If this is the scumbag that killed the poor girl for Chiba University, I hope they convict him and give him a nice old fashioned hanging! RIP poor girl from Chiba University!
