Man arrested for failing to pay hotel bill after one-night stay in Hokkaido

Police in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, have arrested a 65-year-old man on suspicion of fraud after he stayed one night in a hotel and then said the next day he couldn’t pay the bill because he had no money.

Hokkaido Broadcasting Corp reported that the man, who lives in Sapporo, checked in to the hotel at around 8:50 p.m. on Saturday. He ordered dinner by room service.

On Sunday, the man went down to check out and told staff that he had no money and asked the hotel to call the police.

The man was quoted by police as saying it was raining heavily on Saturday night and he had no money on him and couldn’t get home, so he thought he would spend the night in a hotel. He also told police he intended to pay the 12,490 yen hotel bill later.

Japanese news stories on crime normally state the suspects occupation/work status even when it's irrelevant. But when it is relevant, they omit it. Weird.

Was the guy a bank executive? An unemployed janitor? A pensioner? How could he have no money?

So, the guest asked the hotel to call the police even though he offered to pay?

What a mixed up situation

If the man was honest he would have not tricked the hotel into giving him service that he knew he could not pay. Specially when the bill including room service was over 10,000 yen, that is not something done by someone trying to impose as little as possible.

Seriously? You cannot fathom that someone might not have 12,490yen available? Even people with jobs often live day-to-day, with only enough money to barely get by. Lots of people don't have much cash in their pockets or in the bank. And, lots of people don't have credit cards. Of those that do, many have maxed them out just trying to survive.

It's a very tough life for many people.

Suspicion of fraud..........Surely it is fraud. He has admitted he had no money and told the police.

Just charge the credit card...............oh wait

How is that considered fraud? He never intended to pay.

How is that considered fraud? He never intended to pay.

That is precisely what makes it fraud, to deceive people in order to receive benefits.
