Man arrested for fatally stabbing girlfriend in Tokyo apartment

A 24-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, accused of stabbing his 25-year-old girlfriend in the apartment they shared in Nerima Ward.

Police said Ken Shiobara, a part-time employee, called emergency services just after 2 p.m. Wednesday, saying he had stabbed a woman. Officers from the Hikarigaoka police station rushed to the apartment, and found a woman bleeding from wounds to her back and other places, lying on the floor. Shiobara was sitting nearby with a knife beside him.

The woman was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Shiobara admitted to stabbing his girlfriend, telling police they got into an argument and he lost control.

I'm with conbinibento on this one. Now if the victim had sought help and been rebuffed by the "system" then this story could have larger implications. Unfortunately, as combinibento points out, this happens everywhere. It's important that society provide services to help people in abusive relationships and the culture completely condemns domestic violence. Does Japan do that? That's a question that must be asked.

same thing happens everyday, i say death, they say commuted sentance or mental help, whatever. japan's going down the toilet, and they dont relize it.

These cases of Japanese totally freaking out have definitely been on the rise in the past few years. Some of these violent crimes are just unbelievable/unspeakable.

The problem for the Japanese is that they have very little way to reduce their frustration/panic when they get into a tough life or mental situation/condition. They all too often find themselves alone and tied up into knots. It's the 'Japanese gaman way' - or no way at all for many of those in trouble.

Japan has got to open up to new ways of thinking, doing - living. Why in 2009 is it only 2% non-native? How healthy is that? Is the rigid Japanese mode of doing things so perfect?

I live in Tokyo but today am in Dubai. The UAE is 80% non-native! ... and the crime rate - particularly violent crime - is less than Japan's.

The Japanese myth of more foreigners, more crime is completely bogus. Nipponjin merely want to keep things the way they are. I submit to you that the 'way things are' is not all that good. And with no changes to immigration I can guarantee the health of the overall society will only continue to deteriorate and ossify.

Come on Japan, open up a little - it's in your best interest.

Boy, I would not assume anything here, not even that they were actually dating.

Amazing that the guy who first comes to this thread to put some perspective on this gets a slap.

Look everyone, Japan is not some small town in the countryside. It is half the population of the U.S.A. crammed into a country the size of Montana, only 90 percent of this Montana is not habitable. If there were not a story like this daily, the Japanese would not be human; they would be the Borg. Yet, given the conditions, Japan is still amazingly safe.

Scapegoat somebody else please.

Another sad story clearly resulting from the troubled economy. Had this boy been employed full time as opposed to merely part time, he probably wouldn't have had the time to kill this girl. Note he called the police at 2 p.m. Most full time workers are too busy at that time to be calling the police, much less stabbing girls. Just another day in the gritty streets of Nerima.

BBLeo - What the hell was that babble? Please clarify what you just said. Didn't get a bit of it? Thanks in advance.

There seems to be a problem and I don't see anything being done to assist people with these problems. Where are the counselors, social workers, teachers, and bosses, anyone who cares making a statement or trying to rectify the situation? I see the same problem in the news all the time but nothing from the elected officials stating that they are going to try and make a change. Japan just doesn't have those things and if they do they are not readily available for people to use them.

It makes you wonder when you read that they had an argument. The problem is that girl is dead and can't give the evidence. Could DNA prove anything, towards hanging accused or will he get suspended sentence?

apologies for the typos, JT. turn the edit onegai.

I've got 5 yen says they have lived together less than a year he was getting a bit to clingy for victim's liking, she went to break it off and the wee man couldn't handle the rejection.

combinibento- theres nothing come off I meant what I said, if I was anywhere else I would feel the same about that particular area. The thing is I have been to other locations lived there for a while and of course follow the news. I just dont recall being in an arena where not just this incident but many other incidents where dudes take their anger out on someone that might not be as strong as them. You say this is just a simple case of Domestin Violence but this is not simple somebody lost their life. The news can be used to shape the minds of the masses in a positive way or a negative or just simply give you an outlook on certain topics and/or locations. I just by happen to always see in JT crime section that men tend to beat lean towards bullying and killing someone that may not fight back as hard someone that would with same stature. 24 yrs old jobless "man" beats 100 yrs old quadropalegic woman who is blind and deaf in one ear with a titanium basebat because his mother wouldnt give him money for pacchinco; or man 40 yrs old, throws a 5 yrs old child to his death off of a 20 story building, man says " I did it because my boss yelled at me today."

combini-I get what you are trying to say, but you have to remember, this is an article in JT. Not all the facts are out and we are not sure if there was a history of DV in this relationship. Again, the norm has been, with the unemployed Japanese male anyway, is murder or suicide. This guy may have been a part-time employee, but we do not know if he was on his way out the door or if he was moving up, which I am sure everyone doubts. Being a foreigner, we all have different perspectives, but high stressed unemployed Japanese males have been off the chain lately.

convenience store bento- ....we know it happens everywhere, but we live here and its happens at a rate that is statistically saying yeah Japan is going down hill. I bet you are from the UK (guessing) and this thing is common where you come from? DV is everywhere, but everyone doesn't just lose it when arguing and have the impulse to just stab someone to death. That is what most people see about Japan, they just lose it here, its an excuse. He could have jumped in front of a moving car if he was having issues with his gf and wanted to end a life, but no he decided he was a man and he could take advantage of this poor girl and kill her...."oh, I was mad and lost my temper" He has issues....someone who loses their temper (normal person)would just get up and leave. Something going on up in that head of his, Japan has not done much to help its individuals who I know they know my have a mental issue. You can see it from an early age in most, someone was aware and now, he will get a few years, psyche eval and be let back into society just like the rest of the loonies they set back out into the world.

CMEANDU26 maybe she wanted to break up, it seems that "some" people cannot accept that

Oh, come off it everyone. This is a simple case of domestic violence homicide. Happens every day in every country, wherever men & women who souldn't be together ARE together What is with the comments about JAPAN going down the crapper, or that these Japanese guys in particular are weak and lose control? Go to any given paper in any given locale around the world and you'll see this has been happening for centuries.

Moderator: The story is not about other countries. Stay on topic please.

another tragic incident. A young woman pays with her life

As I stated before, seems like a lot of the dudes out here are weak, being that they cant control their frustrations. Another killing of a woman, eh. Maybe its the norm and I am not able to understand it because I am "gaijin;" if that is the case I apologize for commenting on something that is beyond my understanding. Thinking about it maybe his girlfriend threaten him or something, I dont know.

Japan oh Japan!....what's next?

wear a thick styrofoam suit when you fight with your bf/gf

0 ( +0 / -0 )

perhaps if people were more able to argue rationally there would be less instances where arguments ended in bloodshed?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What I can't understand is what were the arguing about that caused him to stab her so many time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Just sad either way. Anger management anyone. RIP.

See what I mean.....it was a guy pushing an old lady off the platform, now another guy stabbing.....lost control? I mean, you must have lost control a coupld of time in your life...there may be some more bodies out there....Police may need to do a background check on this guy....what a punk.

Long term solution for a short term problem.

This guy is innocent, because he is a part-time employee.
