my MIL is way too involved in our lives and on how to raise our daughters but i've never even thought of killing her...

Still, always enough room for speculation: Perhaps another Japanese man that couldn’t handle the separation from and issues with his wife and therefore, struck out and removed the one person she loved more and will be forever haunted by her absence.

I read somewhere that stabbing / shooting someone in the face indicates hatred for the victim; the perp aims for that area to erase the existence of the victim via their most prominent features. If this is true then, well guess this guy didn't have the best relationship with his MiL.

Maybe he thought his MIL was behind his marital problems.

This country really has some issues with family members killing each other and the number of suicides. Very sad state of affairs that should be looked into and help offered to people so desperate they resort to this.
