Police in Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture, said Friday they have arrested a 50-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of fatally stabbing his 64-year-old neighbor.
According to police, Koji Fujiwara has admitted to stabbing Takeshi Ishii outside the front door to his home at around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Fuji TV reported.
Ishii’s wife heard him scream and found him lying at the entrance and called police. Ishii suffered stab wounds to his chest and stomach. He was taken to hospital where he died about two hours later.
Police said Fujiwara, who lives next door, has admitted to the charge, and quoted him as saying he intended to kill Ishii, but he refused to give a motive, saying he didn’t want to talk about it. A blood-stained knife was found in his home.
Ishii’s wife said that she wasn’t aware of any trouble between her husband and Fujiwara.

There are too many creepy and psychopathic neighbors in Japan. This again comes back to the nation of 126 million strangers scenario. I've had my share of weird neighbors over the years. Some of them were just 'monster neighbors' who would call the police for flushing the toilet at 2am. Others who would not communicate or introduce themselves even when you are standing a meter away from them talking to them. I have one living in the adjacent flat at present who actually runs away whenever I catch him outside and try to speak to him. Try to get to know your neighbors people. You could be living next door to Dr. Lecter.

I've heard about unemployed people in Japan committing crimes to get prison time so they don't have to work. I wonder if this is one of those cases?
Though, like Reckless said, there could be a element of an affair or jealousy involved.
