Man arrested for forcibly confining teenage girl he met online

Police in Tagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, have arrested a 40-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of forcibly confining a teenage girl in his home for two days.

According to police, Yorihisa Saiki got to know the girl, who lives in Miyagi Prefecture, on a members-only social networking site, Sankei Shimbun reported.  Police said the two chatted a few times and that Saiki persuaded the girl to come and visit his home where he kept her from Monday until Wednesday this week.

The girl’s parents reported her missing on Tuesday morning. Police said they got a line on her whereabouts after talking with some of her friends.

Police said Saiki has denied that he forcibly confined the girl and was quoted as saying she came to his house of her own free will. However, he admitted that he knew she was a minor.

Yorihisa Saiki got to know the girl on a members-only social networking site,

Are there still any doubts about how common internet grooming of teenagers through nefarious social media websites is in Japan?

Remember that the offense of kidnapping includes the act of luring them to come willingly.

There's no doubt grooming occurs in Japan BUT this doesn't fit the definition. Grooming involves long term interaction meant to desensitize a child to predatory behavior. I hardly would call chatting a few times grooming. This was an impulsive act by a teen.

It's like when people throw out the word pedophile.

Now this unemployment man will get permanent job and free sleeping space for his crime.

@Disillusioned

How do you know the frequency to which this type of crime occurs just by the fact that happened. Meaning you read 1 story and you are now insinuating it is "common". Where is your data?

I don´t know how common it is, and neither do you. But this article does not describe grooming.

This goon coaxed a minor to come to his house using a social media site.

She isn't a robot. He would have to be a regular Rasputin to get her to go all that way to his place against her will through the internet.

You can get to Fukuoka from Miyagi for about 15,000 yen. Children get at least that for their otoshidama every year, not to mention other gifts of money or an allowance. It is entirely doable.

Like I said dude, you really don't know what the term grooming means. You have a general idea but it's quite imprecise to state that this man was grooming the girl since they only chatted a few times online. Dictionaries work!

It is not only in Japan, this happen also in many countries. Though the girl still lucky for being alive?

Looking at the distance from Miyagi to Fukuoka is quite far. Saying that she is a teenager gives the impression that she is like 13-15 years old. To travel that far requires a lot of money for the train to which a kid wouldn't have access to. And she is old enough to know what those creepies be doing or looking for on those sites. Lock him up anyway because she is still a minor in the eyes of the law.

Are you ok? This goon coaxed a minor to come to his house using a social media site. That is internet grooming!

In relation to what Disillusioned said, it really bothers me that teens chatting it up with guys like this. You don't have to be a genius to figure out what those guys are after in those sites. I'm not blaming the victim nor the site for this but were you expecting the girl to be given some milk and cookies when they meet up with people?
