Man arrested for groping woman suspected of several similar offenses

A 25-year-old man who has been arrested on suspicion of sexually molesting a woman on a street in Tokyo is also being questioned about his involvement in a number of similar cases since last October.

According to police, Aoki Mitsuzawa, a company employee, is accused of approaching a woman in her 20s as she walked home along a street in Nerima Ward at around 12:30 a.m. on Jan 29, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police said Mitsuzawa walked by the woman, then suddenly turned around, hugged her and groped her breasts and the lower part of her body.

Police said Mutsuzawa, who was identified after an analysis of street surveillance camera footage, has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying he got a sexual thrill out of groping women.

There have been several similar incidents reported in the same area since last October and police are questioning Mitsuzawa about those incidents as well.

I have an idea, albeit a not so bright and original one. How about having plain clothes police officers "bait" these perverts in order to catch them. This stuff is pretty rampant and I don't see a viable way on how to end this, it seems ingrained.

Police... quoted him as saying he got a sexual thrill out of groping women.

This grinds my gears. Why give sexual violence the oxygen of publicity?

Save these sordid detail for prosecutors and criminal psychologists!

I don't know if I'm wrong and I kind of understand how newspaper articles are titled, but does this one have two meanings?? I know a lot of newspapers are using these 'double meaning' titles to trick readers into reading the article. I literally thought the woman was also suspected of doing similar offenses.

because that would require work. That's the last thing j-cops want to do.

also, just like having a national sexual predators list and harsher penalties, that would be too logical of a solution.

No, there must be a simpler way to do things.

I got it! Cover up most cases with pay offs and hush hush deals, so they don't show up in the statistics!

Well stated @CaptainObvious 9:15am. - Well now, even that response could be taken ‘out-of-context’ but you understand ‘no offense’ was intended. - Agree with your observation: the headline, at-first-glance, does have an alternate meaning.

Original headline 6:00am JST: “Man arrested for groping woman suspected of several similar offenses” -

should perhaps read:

Man suspected in several similar crimes arrested for groping woman.”

suspected of several similar offenses

Pretty safe assumption that he has been at it for a while, and a lot victims do not bother to report it.

I mean it doesnt matter much if they catch them, there are no real punishments for these crimes in Japan. Pretty much just a catch and release and may be put a stop to their actions for 3-4 weeks max. Even if Japan police initially arrest people who molest or rape, 99% of the the time they will not be prosecuted, and even if they somehow get prosecution the maximum penalty will just be a 2-3 year suspended sentence.

Riiiiight. So he was involved in similar incidents in the past and the police did...nothing. No follow-ups; no checking up on him to make sure he was behaving himself - nothing. How typical of Japan. These sexual crimes will continue until the Japanese justice system gets serious about punishing such offenders.

@purple_depressed_bacon LOL I get it. You must have had a problem with the Japanese justice system or had problems with the police. Your post are very critical of what the police in Japan could have done or what they didn't do. I think perhaps you should join your community policing team and become a neighborhood watch captain. I am sure you would be able to stop all crimes committed and prosecute those to the fullest extent of the law. Japan could possibly use your skills inspector gadget. Your post discredits the Japanese police force in your eyes but most articles say its a pretty safe country to live in compared to other countries around the world. Take it or leave it.

The Japanese police should install a sting operation to catch these parasites. Have a police woman go undercover as someone dressed extremely provocatively to lure these parasites and then they can be caught before causing harm. Once these parasites are caught, the minimum for such crime should be 15 years in prison with no chance of parole.

Any more serious sexual crime should have 88 years with no chance of parole.

We need to foster a safer society immediately.

You're entirely wrong in your assumption that they don't do this already. And doing it in bold at that. Ouch.

They are actually doing on crowded trains that are notorious for "chikan". And even there, it is a lot of work hours with pretty meager results. Just having police women walk around nilly willy in Tokyo waiting to be groped would be a ridiculous waste of ressources.

The idea behind the sting is to take preventative measures so that these type of incidents never occur again. Also, if the parasites get at least 15 years behind bars are with no chance of parole, that is an additional deterrent. We need to cease being concerned about the parasites’ rights and start being concerned/have sympathy regarding the victims (Yes I know some extreme liberal/communist is going to object to this).

@baroque

Hey now, I am a communist and I pretty much agree with you. You might be surprised.

Maybe could argue semantics over the numbers a bit for first-time offenders, but a much stricter punishment off the bat for sexual assault offenders (which is what these people are) would definitely go a long way. It is entirely too lax as it stands.
