Police said Matsumoto has admitted to the allegation and quoted him as saying he got angry at his daughter because she came home late.

It seems a lot of Japanese people have anger control issues. I wonder where that comes from. It couldn't be due to social pressure to not show emotions, could it?

On the contrary, I see teenage school girls roam around late at night, sometimes after midnight and I ask myself why their parents allow their daughters to stay out.

It's interesting that she called someone from the school, possibly her homeroom teacher. I remember a few years ago at a school I worked in one of the 3rd grade junior girls ran away from home to Osaka from Tokyo. Her homeroom teacher was the one who went and got her, not her parents.

Well done home room teacher. I hope the parents paid the transport and other expenses and showered the teacher with appreciation.

When I first got to my current school, one of the female students greeted me cheerfully. The next words out of her mouth were 'I hate my father'. I was shocked and saddened but she wouldn't say why.

Maybe dad needs advice and support on how to handle a naughty teen daughter and naughty teen daughter needs some reasonable but firm discipline.

I think it's hard to judge much from this article, especially regarding the dad. (except for the fact that his actions were wrong and are not the right way to discipline a teenager)

Is he the kind of dad that is dangerously violent and his daughter an innocent angel? Or is this a one time blow up in frustration over his rebellious daughter who is running around late at night with a bad crowd and causing him and his wife massive headaches? Or is it somewhere in between?

IF it's the first, then thank God the police are now involved.

IF it's the second, then he needs counseling and support to help him reign his daughter in the right way before she causes herself serious damage.

My guess is it's most likely somewhere in between.

Ideally yes, and this dad shouldn't have done.

Japan ought to be dealing with serious cases of sexual and physical child abuse. But if the facts presented in this story are all there is to it (no serious injury reported) then this doesn't warrant national news in the least compared with the many other serious cases that must have occurred yesterday.

One definitely should not be hitting people with umbrellas and definitely not for being late...even if they have a bad reason for being late.

The sexism there is bad enough, but I find the sentiment of approving of the denial of freedom to teenagers equally repugnant.

As a young teenager I was extremely free. I was simply directed to let my parents or grandparents know where I was. I was much bettered for this freedom as I believe most non-disturbed teenagers are. And its not like lording over your teens does not have consequences. It DOES...such as sneaking out in the middle of the night, and sneaking in general which leads to careless, unthinking, unplanned actions which leads to disasters. Now throw sex and alcohol in the mix and you see some common disasters we all know of. Life is risk but if you are going to be a jail warden of a parent you will more like increase the risk than mitigate it.
