Man arrested for injuring police officer with machete in interrogation room

A 45-year-old unemployed man who was arrested for threatening to kill his father attacked a 47-year-old police officer with machete while he was being held for questioning in an interrogation room at a police station in Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday while the officer was questioning Shinichi Mizuo, Fuji TV reported. Earlier Sunday, Mizuo was arrested after he threatened to kill his father with a knife, a charge with he denied.

Following his arrest, Mizuo was taken into the interrogation room to have his personal belongings checked, which included a case containing a machete with a 12-centimeter blade. After the police officer arranged Mizuo’s possessions on a desk, Mizuo asked if he could go to the restroom. The officer briefly turned his back to the suspect, and was hit on the head by the weapon.

Mizuo was subdued by other police and also been charged with assault and obstructing an officer in the line of duty.

Police said the officer suffered multiple cuts, but his injuries are not life-threatening.

NOT SMART ON THE PART OF THE POLICE OFFICER. As a former police officer I can tell you,  YOU AWAYS KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE SUSPECT NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THEM ... Because crap like this can happen. Hope all JN cops learn a lesson from this incident....

So, a psycho who was arrested for a violent crime was put in a detention room unrestrained with a bag containing a machete? You can't make this stuff up. What a bunch of incompetent idiots!

A 鉈 ナタ 'nata' is a short-bladed stubby chopper, often with a blunt downward protrusion at the tip, carried by gardeners and woodcutters. 12 cm blade is only 5 inches long. Almost impossible to find a suitable English word to translate it. This would be far down the list of weapons that anyone would choose to assault someone with, possibly the most easy to justify carrying out and about. Careless of the policeman to turn his back, though. Hope he makes a swift recovery.

For future reference police - you don't need to keep the weapon used in the same room with the suspect as you go thru the rest of his personal items.

Why didn't they pat him down? J cops are useless and these are the people who are apparently protecting our lives?

If he was taken into custody then ideally he should have been searched prior to going in a vehicle/police station.

Common sense policing procedures really!

No handcuffs?

A knife with a 12 CM blade is hardly a machete. It's just a knife, exaggerating to say the least!

5 in machete? WTF, more like a fruit knife

This type of blade is good for cutting roots or weeds in a garden. A machete is 3x longer.
