Police in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, have arrested a 48-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of abandoning the body of his 80-year-old mother at their home.

According to local media, Hideki Okazaki told police his mother Toshiko died sometime in early September and that he didn't know what to do. Local media reported that Toshiko’s eldest daughter called police on Saturday, claiming she couldn’t reach her mother.

When officers visited the house, they found Toshiko’s body lying on the floor in the kitchen. Police said there were no external signs of injury on the body and that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The "Mental disorder" claim could be collaborated by checking whether or not her Pension was being drawn upon. Either-ways, a dead body lying on the floor during the summer months must surely have left such a stench that someone would have noticed ?

I have dealt with the loss of a loved one outside of Japan, but here, I have no idea - my initial instinct would be to call for help 119, and then let it unfold from there. I hope the Support in Japan for assisting those dealing with the Deceased is as good as that which I received in my Home Country.

Boy that pension must be precious, so mama stays on the kitchen floor.

Hercolobus - Incomprensible how anybody within reason would like to live with a cadaver.

Desperation can cause a person to do things they themselves had once thought incomprehensible.

“Didn’t know what to do”. How often is that used as an excuse.

Wait.........this doens't add up! How could you see YOUR MOTHER unconscious on the floor IN THE KITCHEN one of the most used rooms in any house, be a grown man at age 48 and not know 3 SIMPLE NUMBERS : 119!?! A number little kids are taught at kindergartens and elementary schools to call in case of any emergencies! It was probably her time to go, but anyone one else would've done their best to make sure she gets back on her feet! Here we have a grown man, probably stepping over his mother to get to the fridge to eat! What a sad way to go! Sleep well, dear mother!

Local authorities will cremate a body for a very small fee. No service.

We pay funeral insurance. Not so much each month, but no way can we come up with more that ¥2.4million+ suddenly to cover the cost. The guy is unemployed.

Mirroring the prescient plot of "Shoplifting Family"?

When officers visited the house, they found Toshiko’s body lying on the floor in the kitchen.

Pension scams and petty theft might be what keeps many Japanese families surviving in the late stage capitalist hellscape engineered by the LDP.
