Police in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, have arrested a 24-year-old man for vandalism after he kicked a police motorcycle that was parked next to a koban (police box).

According to police, Kenji Tomioka, whose occupation is unknown, kicked the motorbike over beside the koban in Tama Ward’s Noborito neighborhood at around 1:40 a.m. on Dec 28, Sankei Shimbun reported. One of the rearview mirrors was broken, causing damage worth about 18,000 yen. The bike belonged to an officer who had come to the koban in response to an emergency call.

Tomioka emerged as a suspect when he was seen on surveillance camera footage. He was quoted by police as saying he had no recollection of the incident because he was drunk.

he had no recollection of the incident because he was drunk.

Gotta get sick of hearing this as a defence. Isn't public drunkenness an offence in Japan?

Gotta get sick of hearing this as a defence.

How is this a defense? Do you think that they're just going to let him go away as a result, no punishment, all good carry on?

Because they won't. The punishment will be exactly the same as if he weren't drunk.

Being drunk is not a defense for crime in Japan, no matter how many times people repeat it.

Let him off.Drunk and young.

Say sorry, pay for the repair and do a good deed such as cleaning the koban lav for a month

"no recollection of the incident because he was drunk"

well since these buffoons can't control their own behavior and memory, perhaps a pipeline to a booby hatch would suffice.

Was it a Kawasaki?

Yes, bike parts are pretty expensive here......

Poor guy, will probably do a 3 to 5 stretch with no time off for good behavior.
