Man arrested for kicking woman down, stealing her bag

A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting and robbing a woman as she walked along a street in Nishi-Arai in Tokyo's Adachi Ward, police said Monday.

According to police, the suspect, Jun Takemoto, approached the 20-year-old woman from behind as she walked home at around 12:40 a.m. on Jan 12. Fuji TV reported that Takemoto allegedly kicked the woman to the ground and stole a shopping bag containing 3,000 yen worth of chocolates and other items.

Police said Takemoto was identified through street surveillance camera footage.

Takemoto was quoted by police as saying that he had quarreled with his wife the day before and that he was in an irritable mood. He admitted kicking the woman down but denied stealing anything.

Police are questioning Takemoto about three similar assaults in the same area since last summer in which a man came up behind women, put them in a headlock and stole their bags.

He was such an idiot stupid man & no manners seriously! He kicked an innocent woman & stole their bags for no reason but denied stealing everything after he quarreled with his wife the day before but it was luckied that the woman he kicked down wasn't hurt badly! Please always stay safe, young woman in Japan!

a habitual offender.

@Steve Crichton. Why are you apologising? Let's hope he is punished appropriately and also educated about the damage such actions can do do to young victims. Finally offered anger management classes.

@triumph

That's not an apology. It's amusing that whenever I use the word 'sorry', my Japanese friends assume I was apologizing.

Well, it is Adachi ward. Not the safest part of Tokyo - also has the lowest average income per household of the 23 wards (3m / yr). Plenty of crime there (I lived in a neighbouring ward for 4 years - also had my bag stolen).

Well, I hope that in prison he becomes 'irritable' and tries this stuff on other inmates; see how long he lasts in a society in which he is on equal footing.

(just to clarify - the guy is a loony & needs to be locked up. I was not in any way insinuating that the area was part of the cause)

A young women walking about alone at this time at night is dangerous in any country.

LoL. Me too. @AsianGaijin I always forget what I had for breakfast.

It's dangerous but, Japanese women always fight back. Plus there are street surveillance cameras and Kobans everywhere.

these types never beat down other men do they?

No good. Lock him up.

"Takemoto was quoted by police as saying that he had quarreled with his wife the day before and that he was in an irritable mood"

man-child was in an irritable mood (married) so the serial it decided to lay and wait take it out on an innocent and defenseless young woman.

perhaps a public and humiliating beating by women in the middle of downtown Tokyo that way it will save time and yen for a court system that only adds to the burdens of a taxpayer. Public justice for these petty criminals is welcomed.

I am beyond shocked that this kind of incident would ever occur in Japan being that Japan along with Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world. Perhaps Japan should begin emulating Singapore in regards to consequences for these horrible acts. If Japan emulated Singapore, these types of incidents would be less likely to occur. Nothing like this ever occurs in Singapore. Lets hope that horrible individual suffers severe consequences (a caning would be nice).

Dear Japan: Mental Health Care, NOW.

Who would call this lame-o their "husband".

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

the guy married to prevent being deported... he could have just exited japan and reentered with a spouse visa he can't have it both ways saty in Japan and break the law He resisted deportation so he has to be restrained, and he died unfortunately because of a medical problem Blame who? I say blame the dead guy. He causesd all these and I have to pay my taxes.

Now he got arrested. "I hope this teaches you crime doesn't pay" is what I'd like to say, but I don't know if this would give him a kick in the seat of the pants.

A young women walking about alone at this time at night is dangerous in any country. @nattorice In Japan, for women to be attacked at night is actually quite rare. Maybe because there are always many people around or police box (koban) is not too far away or people don't want to commit a crime and ruin their lives or they question themselves twice between could do but shouldn't or could do and should do. For any other country I would say its dangerous for women to walk at night, but Japan, still think it's one of the safest countries for women to walk alone at night.

This guy is really disgusting for kicking that women though. Glad police caught him but using a bulls*it excuse saying he was in an irritable mood because he argued with his wife, to kick a woman....I wish I was there to really deck him out...even if it costs me my visa.

I was waiting for the "I was drunk and do not remember anything" excuse.

Kick that git down and see how he likes it... what a cowardly piece of scum. Drop him down some stairs.

Come on Japan Today, why aren't you including the nationality/race on the perpetrator like you do when it is a non-Japanese?~

Should read: Japanese Man arrested for kicking woman down, stealing her bag

Only fair isn't it?

Is Japan so safe that this is worthy of reporting as news? Surely people get mugged every day. I'm always amazed by the personal tragedy headlines here about suicide, drink driving, murder etc, the likes of which is more appropriate to be reported in a local community newspaper.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

"more appropriate [for] a local community newspaper"

Nothing further to add!!

Perhaps it is because JT reports about all things related to Japan and that the incident occurred in a city located in Japan with the victim and perpetrator being Japanese, the readers should have no reason to infer that they are not. It becomes redundant.

Sure, but can you see how identifying the ethnicity/nationality of a criminal suspect sets up stereotyping/profiling? Consider why as a rule most news organisations don't include ethnicity/nationality in their headlines.

Moderator: Not relevant. No newspaper in the world does such a thing.

Let me see he beat his wife or she beat him so he took his frustrations out on another helpless women. He took her chocolates and gave them to his wife as a make up gift! coward!

This guy seems like someone we really want running around in society. He must get in arguments with his wife allot if he is suspected of doing this before.
