Police said Wednesday they have arrested an unemployed 58-year-old man on suspicion of killing his 86-year-old mother at their apartment in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, in May.

According to police, Hisa Seki strangled his mother Rie at around 2 p.m. on May 31. He then called 110 and said he had killed his mother.

When police arrived on the scene, they found Rie dead and Seki unconscious after he had slit his left wrist in an apparent suicide attempt, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Police waited for Seki to recover from his wounds before questioning him. He was quoted as saying he had strangled his mother with his hands and that he also wanted to die.

Police said Seki’s mother had been diagnosed with severe depression last year and that Seki told them he did not want to see his mother struggle with life any further and that it was becoming increasingly difficult to look after her.

Most decent nursing homes and/or assisted living centers in Japan have at least a 10 million yen entrance fee plus a monthly fee of 200,000 yen.

@Myhumbletake

This is why many prefer to put their old parents in care centers.

How could an unemployed 58 yo afford such huge costs ?

...of which there are not nearly enough and those that do exist sometimes don't take such good care of their residents...

Egregious. This is why many prefer to put their old parents in care centers.

Another day, the same scenario. Elderly child or spouse becomes full time carer for ailing parent or partner, snaps from the pressure and kills parent or partner. (insert names, dates and places here). Sad!

She was probably depressed because her son was unemployed and still resides with her.
