Man arrested for killing woman in Niigata in 2019 dies in prison while awaiting trial

A 26-year-old man who was arrested in November 2019 on suspicion of killing his 20-year-old ex-girlfriend in Niigata City was found dead in his cell earlier this month, police said.

Prison officials said Ryosuke Saito, 25, who was awaiting trial for the murder of Yuzuki Ishizawa on Nov 15, 2019, died of acute renal failure in Niigata Prison on Jan 3, Fuji TV reported. The prison announced his death on Jan 14.

Saito was charged with killing Ishizawa who worked at a bar on the second floor of a building near JR Niigata Station. The victim was stabbed multiple times and was found dead on the stairs in the building.

On the night of the murder, Saito's mother in Ageo, Saitama Prefecture, called the police, saying her son had hinted at attacking his ex-girlfriend. Saito was on the run for three days after the murder. He was arrested after a convenience store employee in Niigata City spotted him.

Why did he die? 26 is not an age for natural death.

Prison guards or another prisoner most probably beat him to death.

Guys, before you talk about the guy deserving what he got, remember, this is a nation with a 99% conviction rate because it admittedly violates human rights, and many people are not actually guilty who end of confessing. There was a story just yesterday circulating about how Japan is notorious for still keeping people in prison, with no rights, phone calls, or anything, for 21 days or so, to get a confession (and where cops refuse cameras).

Perhaps this man did it, but the point is that he was awaiting TRIAL for more than year, so we don't even know if he was guilty of the crime without a doubt. And others are right -- you don't die naturally of acute renal failure at 25 without some preexisting condition, which I assume would have been mentioned. Unless the guy had developed some serious stones that got lodged in the tubes, he was beaten to death.... albeit slowly.

What causes acute renal failure? According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the following:

• blood flow slows to your kidneys

• direct damage to your kidneys

• Your kidneys' urine drainage tubes (ureters) become blocked and wastes can't leave your body through your urine

How do ureters become blocked? If someone punches you enough in the kidneys or near them, they can damage the ureters.

Notice if you will ‘direct damage’ to your kidneys. In other words, someone just beat the crap out of your kidneys. As Cricky alludes.

Yes, Saito probably killed his ex-girlfriend and should have been punished, but when I read he died of ‘acute renal failure’ alarm bells went off.

Could be another forced false confession.

We'll never know the truth.

Maybe not, but...

On the night of the murder, Saito's mother in Ageo, Saitama Prefecture, called the police, saying her son had hinted at attacking his ex-girlfriend.

Evidently, he spoke to her so when your own mother says this, I think we can say without much doubt that it wasn't forced or false.

That's pretty young for renal failure, 10-15 years ago I remember a story about prison guards using a high pressure hose resulting in renal failure. Nobody charged of course, it was a prisoner. Somethings never change. There was not a trail,

No trasparacy so it's suspicious, does he count in the 99% conviction rate? not defending what he may have done at all. Just suspicious death in custody.

26 yrs old is too young to die. 10 yrs of prison to suffer is better.

Thank goodness this individual is gone for eternity. Justice for the Victim and her family. Not shedding any tears for this horrible thing. Good riddance.

Rest in hell is more appropriate for this murderer.
