Is it? Or do you just get that impression from reading articles about crime? Can you show the stats that show crime to be increasing?

Its actually decreasing (except by seniors where it is actually increasing)

Overall penal code violations decreased 9.3 percent from the previous year to 1,099,048, falling below the previous record of 1,190,549 set in 1973, the agency said in a preliminary report. All crime categories marked declines from 2014. The number of thefts, which account for more than 70 percent of crimes in Japan, dropped to 807,605 from 897,259, while murders fell to 933 from 1,054. Fraud cases dropped to 39,439 from 41,523, but cases of furikome sagi (bank transfer scams) or phone scams rose 1,474 to 12,729. The crime clearance rate, or the percentage of cases solved by police to total reported crimes, improved to 32.5 percent from 30.6 percent, with the ratio for murder and other violent crimes rising to 72.3 percent from 68.2, topping the 70 percent mark for the first time in 16 years. By age, the number of crimes committed by juveniles aged between 14 and 19 fell sharply to 39,501 from 142,594 in 2002, when the total number of penal code violations was at its peak. Crimes by seniors aged 65 or older, meanwhile, nearly doubled to 47,643 from the 2002 figure of 24,241, reflecting Japan’s graying society.

Interesting that the post where I questioned the original statement is at -5, when it turns out that my questioning of the original statement was valid, since the statement has been proven to be incorrect. I guess the people voting down are more concerned with their feelings, than with the truth.

No, it's not. In fact, violent crime is down.

The per capita intentional homicide rate for Japan still remains significantly lower than almost any other country in the world, according to the UN World DataBank. There a lot of different ways you can look at the data, but if we were to, say, look at the 10 most populous countries in the world in 2014, with Japan being the 10th, and then we looked at the number of murders per 100,000 people in those countries, Japan ranks at the bottom of that list with 0.3 murders per 100,000 Japanese. The next closest country is Indonesia with 0.5 murders per 100,000, then China at 0.8, Bangladesh at 2.6, and so on.

In fact, Japan's rate of 0.3 murders per 100,000, or a total of 381 murders in 2015, has been dropping steadily since 1998 from a 25-year high of 0.6 murders per 100,000.

For comparison, the United States sees 3.9 murders per 100,000 and the Russian Federation sees 9,5. Then, of course, there is Brazil, which experiences a mind-boggling 24.6 murders per 100,000 citizens.

Yeah, Japan is still relatively safe. And that's the key word here: Relative. Relative to some 217 countries in the world, fewer people are murdered in Japan per capita than are murdered in 99% of those other 216 sharing data with the United Nations.

I find it amazing, that there is "a" reported "violent" crime and there is always someone who wants to say "oh, crime stats are rising!" without showing any proof of evidence that it is true. Are you isolating yourself from "Global" news as most likely more people were violently killed and injured in one week or two in one US city, pick one...Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee then a year in whole country of Japan.

WOW Strangerland..... Why are people giving you so many "thumbs down" when all you asked was "Show me the proof" that indicates "crime is increasing"? AND... as it turns out... you are quite correct in questioning as every survey I have found so far, does in fact indicate violent crime is on a downward trend in Japan. If people think Japan is not safe... perhaps they should visit Chicago, Detroit or Milwaukee and get a new perspective on "What's Not Safe". ;)

Readers, comparisons with crime rates in other countries are not relevant to this story. Some of you keep hijacking the discussion with this debate on almost every crime story we post.

This sounds like a horrible, terrible incident. I'm wondering if the scissors were used to stab the bloke, who turned them on the young lady. But to slit her throat... sick :(
